The new label, Greenwich Entertainment, was started in partnership with Edmondo Schwartz.
Veteran art house distributor Ed Arentz announced Friday a new New York-based distribution label, Greenwich Entertainment, in partnership with an investment fund run by Edmondo Schwartz.
Greenwich plans to handle between six and eight traditional theatrical releases and a similar number of smaller-scale releases annually.
Initial acquisitions for Greenwich’s 2018 slate include Jan Zabeil’s dramatic thriller Three Peaks, starring Bérénice Bejo and Alexander Fehling, which is having its North American premiere in Toronto after its world premiere at Locarno. The deal for U.S. and Canada was concluded in Locarno with The Match Factory’s head of sales, Thania Dimitrakopoulou.
Also slated for a 2018 theatrical release is Claus Räfle’s documentary thriller The Invisibles, the story of four German Jews who manage to survive the Third Reich living in Berlin by resourcefulness, luck and the decency of fellow Germans. Beta Cinema CEO Dirk Schuerhoff negotiated the terms with Arentz for U.S. and Canada, and the film will have its North American premiere next month at the Mill Valley Film Festival.
Arentz, who previously served as managing director of Music Box Films, left that company, which he co-founded with William Schopf, in April after a nine-year run. He previously worked with Schwartz when the two co-founded Empire Pictures in 2000, and Schwartz also co-founded Cohen Media Group in 2010.
During his time at Music Box, Arentz acquired and released such titles at the Swedish version of The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo, Ida and A Man Called Ove.
“Vast resources, scale and a global reach come in handy in this business, as in any other, but it seems clear to us that film distribution is still an arena where a small but efficient, resourceful, reasonably capitalized firm can provide important value to producers, viewing platforms, audiences and investors alike. We’re excited to begin testing this proposition anew,” Arentz said in announcing the new venture.
