Inhumans Pilot Was Shot Fast & Cheap, But With ‘Radical’ Concepts
While the premiere of Marvel’s Inhumans series, which tells the tale of superpowered royalty living out a life on isolation on the moon, is inching closer and closer, fan anticipation is perhaps outweighed by a fear about the show’s quality. However, director Roel Reiné, who helmed the show’s first two episodes which will be presented in theaters as a single IMAX film ahead of their ABC debut, assure audiences there’s nothing to be afraid of.
In an interview with CNet, Reiné was rather frank about the upcoming series and his filming process, which involved a tight schedule and low budget.
Describing his schedule as “super tight,” Reiné said he had “TV schedule time to shoot it with IMAX cameras, 20 days to shoot two episodes.” While the director expressed how nerve wracking it was in some ways, he also noted that it was a luxury compared to the low-budget films he’s shot over the years.
Reiné also noted that a Marvel executive was always hanging around him on set, ensuring things would connect properly to the other parts of the Marvel Cinematic Universe while staying true to the characters’ comic book roots. “These people are very passionate about their product and about characters and about doing the best version of everything.” Still, he wasn’t put off by the stories he’d heard about the company and its reported micromanagement style. In fact, he said Marvel liked what he pitched most of the time, “even the radical things.”
The first two episode of Inhumans will premiere Sept. 1 in IMAX theaters, followed by their broadcast debut Friday, Sept. 29, at 8 p.m. ET/PT on ABC. The drama stars Anson Mount as Black Bolt, Iwan Rheon as Maximus the Mad, Serinda Swan as Queen Medusa, Ken Leung as Karnak, Isabelle Cornish as Crystal, Eme Ikwuakor as Gorgon, Mike Moh as Triton and Sonya Balmores as Auran.
