deadline.com/2017/07/spawn-blumhouse-todd-mcfarlane-1202133261/Blumhouse & Todd McFarlane Team For 'Spawn' Movie - Comic-Con Todd McFarlane, creator of the comic-book character Spawn, is partnering via his McFarlane Films banner with Jason Blum’s Blumhouse to bring the antihero back to the big screen. While it’s not news there’s going to be a Spawn movie (McFarlane has been counting down this Comic-Con announcement on his social channels), the fact that Blumhouse is behind it is. The first Spawn movie starring Michael Jai White was released by New Line in 1997 and grossed $87.8M at the worldwide box office off a $40 million production cost. It opened to $19.7M domestically, ranking second during the first weekend of August; it ended its domestic run at $54.9M. Published by Image Comics, Spawn follows elite CIA mercenary Al Simmons, who after being killed by his partner is sent to hell because he was responsible for the death of several innocent people. Simmons makes a deal for his soul with an evil being known as Malebolgia so he could see his wife again. But Simmons is turned into a demonic creature and sent back to Earth. McFarlane will pen the first draft of the screenplay and is set to make his directorial debut. He is known for reinventing the look of Spider-Man as well as co-creating the Venom character for Marvel Comics. “Having worked with many visionary directors, I think Todd’s unique artistic talents will only add to his role as director of this film,” Blum said in a statement. Blumhouse is having a fantastic 2017 with its two titles Split and Get Out together amassing $529M in global ticket sales off combined budgets of $13.5M.

www.cbr.com/spawn-reboot-supernatural-thriller-wont-speak/Spawn Reboot Is a ‘Supernatural-Thriller,’ Not a Superhero Movie Image Comics co-founder and industry legend Todd McFarlane has shared that the upcoming film based on his character Spawn will be a “supernatural-thriller,” rather than a superhero movie. “We just signed off on the script, and are going into budgeting,” McFarlane told azcentral. “We’re also having our casting meeting… It will be dark and heavy, serious, R-rated. It won’t be a superhero movie. I don’t think most people would categorize it as that. It will be a supernatural thriller, like a lot of good creep movies. The only thing in the movie that’s fantastic is Spawn, and anything else is otherwise normal.” McFarlane also explained more about the role of Spawn in the film, confirming that the character would not “say a word the entire movie,” again citing 1975’s Jaws as inspiration. “It’s about the sheriff and the people, chasing the ghost,” he continued. “That’s it… The lead role isn’t Spawn, the lead role is a cop, like Sheriff Brody from Jaws. I think we can hook a fairly significant actor that we want. Unlike a superhero movie, we wouldn’t need an actor to put on prosthetic (makeup) or go to the gym. We just need him to act.” The original Spawn movie, which starred Michael Jai White and John Leguizamo, came out in 1997 and was the title character’s big-screen debut. McFarlane has said several times that the new film would be different from other superhero movies and fall into the horror/suspense genre. Spawn #1 was published in May 1992. The series recounts the story of Albert Francis Simmons, a CIA operative recruited into the shadowy world of covert operations. Simmons is murdered by one of his squad mates on a mission and is sent to Hell because of his murderous life choices. In Hell, Simmons is contracted by the demonic Malebolgia to become a Hellspawn, the foot troops of the fiery dimension. Blumhouse Productions will produce Spawn, with McFarlane writing and directing. No cast or release date has yet been announced.

www.cbr.com/jamie-foxx-spawn-movie-role/Jamie Foxx Reportedly Offered Spawn Role, Film to Co-Star Twitch There are rumblings of a major development for Todd McFarlane’s long-discussed Spawn movie reboot, with Jamie Foxx rumored to be offered the lead role. Although filming had been expected to begin this month on Blumhouse Productions low-budget take on the comic book antihero, the casting of Al Simmons has yet to be announced. But McFarlane has tried to create a gritty R-rated reboot for five years now, with Foxx lobbying to play Spawn since 2013. According to That Hashtag Show, those may be more than mere hopes, as the Oscar winner is being heavily linked to the role. Michael Jai White previously played Simmons, but it’s a case of out with the old and in with the new. The site notes that although production is now aiming for an August start date, Spawn is still looking for a 2019 release. The report reveals, “Foxx has yet to sign on for the role and his decision may ultimately be a major factor in how fast this project gets off the ground.” As well as Foxx playing the title character, the “new” Spawn will also shift focus away from Simmons’ family. “Should he, or another actor quickly take on the role, however, they’ll be sharing the spotlight with another lead.” While Mark A.Z. Dippé’s 1997 movie focused on the tragic backstory of Simmons after the character was burned to death, McFarlane’s new iteration will bring someone else from his Image Comics franchise into the movie. As a co-star alongside Spawn, homicide detective Twitch Williams is set to have a major role. First appearing in McFarlane’s Spawn series, Twitch had his own spinoff series alongside Sam Burke, known simply as Sam and Twitch. Foxx may be a big name to cast as Spawn, but McFarlane has already said that Simmons won’t say a word in the new movie, and will spend most of the screen time under the character’s signature hooded costume — imagine Deadpool but without the one-liners. Foxx is no stranger to superhero movies following his turn as Electro in Marc Webb’s The Amazing Spider-Man 2. Blumhouse is a well-suited studio to have behind the project. Known for its acclaimed horror movies like Get Out and Split, Blumhouse should fit McFarlane’s hopes of being a “horror movie and a thriller movie.”
