Marvel's 'Runaways,' From 'The O.C.' Creators, Ordered to Series at Hulu
Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage will serve as showrunners on the beloved comic adaptation.
Hulu is officially joining the Marvel squad.
The streamer, as part of its NewFronts presentation Wednesday, has handed out a series pickup to Marvel drama Runaways. The 10-episode drama will premiere in 2018.
From The O.C. creators Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage, who will serve as showrunners, Runaways is based on the comics of the same name and centers on six teens who unite against a common foe: their parents. The cult classic landed at Hulu in August with a pilot and full-season script commitment. The series is based on the beloved series by Brian K. Vaughan (Y: The Last Man) and Adrian Alphona.
Schwartz and Savage co-write and exec produce alongside Marvel head of television Jeph Loeb and Jim Chory. The series hails from ABC Signature, the cable-focused arm of ABC Studios, and Schwartz and Savage's Fake Empire banner. Faking It's Gregg Sulkin stars.
Runaways is Hulu's first collaboration with Marvel and comes as the comic book powerhouse continues to expand its TV footprint. In addition to ABC's Agents of SHIELD — its first live-action scripted series — the comic book company also has The Inhumans (a straight-to-series drama launching in Imax theaters in a groundbreaking deal) set to debut in the fall on ABC. Beyond that, Marvel has Freeform's recent straight to series order New Warriors, a slate of shows at Netflix including Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, Iron Fist, mini-mashup The Defenders as well as The Punisher. The company just scored a second season for FX's X-Men take Legion and has a Matt Nix pilot in the works at Fox, with Amy Acker attached.
For Hulu, Runaways joins a slate of originals including critical favorite The Handmaid's Tale, The Looming Tower, Future Man, The Mindy Project, National Treasure, Casual, The Path, Difficult People, Shut Eye and Chance.
Schwartz and Savage, meanwhile, also have The CW's Dynasty reboot in the works this pilot season, which sources note is heating up for a series pickup.
