Tribeca: Elian Gonzalez Doc Goes to Gravitas
Executive produced by Alex Gibney, the doc charting the headline-making custody battle over the 5-year-old Cuban boy in 1999 hits theaters May 19.
Gravitas Ventures has acquired U.S. distribution rights to Elian, the doc that shares the remarkable story of 5-year-old Elian Gonzalez.
Elian is executive-produced by Alex Gibney's Jigsaw Productions and produced by Trevor Birney of Fine Point Films. It is co-directed by Ross McDonnell and Tim Golden. The film is slated for a platform theatrical release beginning in New York and Los Angeles on May 19, following its world premiere at the Tribeca Film Festival on April 21. Co-production partner CNN Films will be the worldwide broadcast and mobile premiere presenter and is the exclusive presenter for U.S. television broadways. It also holds rights to broadcast the film in Canada. Amazon Prime Video will be the exclusive streaming-video home of the film in the U.S.
The doc centers on the 5-year-old Cuban boy plucked from the Florida Straits on Thanksgiving Day in 1999. After his mother and others perished at sea, the custody battle between Gonzalez's Cuban father and Miami-based relatives sparked a flash point for simmering post-Cold War U.S. and Cuban tensions. Narrated by Raul Esparza, the story is updated with the voice of the 23-year-old Gonzalez.
The deal was negotiated by Nolan Gallagher for Gravitas Ventures and by Jonathan Ford with Content Media Corporation on behalf of the filmmakers.
