UK eSports Network Ginx to Launch 24/7 TV Channel in Canada
In a North American first, Super Channel is going all-in with competitive video gaming by launching a linear and on-demand channel by this summer.
Competitive eSports has made it to North American TV with a 24/7 channel in Canada aimed at video game fans.
U.K.-based Ginx eSports TV has inked a deal with Canadian premium pay TV network Super Channel to launch a linear TV and on-demand channel by this summer. The new eSports channel will feature live multiplayer video gaming events, news and gaming lifestyle programming.
"It's the equivalent of an ESPN fully dedicated to competitive gaming and live eSport tournament coverage, and other eSports programming, bringing that to TV and on-demand audiences," FanTrust Entertainment Strategies president Catherine Warren, who hammered out the deal between Ginx and Super Channel, told The Hollywood Reporter.
Pan-European pay TV giant Sky and the U.K.'s ITV last year joined forces with Ginx TV to launch Ginx eSports TV. The TV channel showcases major eSports tournaments from across the globe, including Turner’s ELeague events, as well as independent programming.
The Canadian version will feature a slew of locally produced programming. Financial terms of the Ginx TV deal, which was unveiled at the eSports BAR conference in Cannes, were not disclosed.
In North America, broadcasters largely ignored the fast-growing eSports phenomenon until WME | IMG and Turner Broadcasting System launched an eSports league with weekly televised games on TBS last year. "Canada has long been in our sights. It consistently represents a global top 10 eSports nation and is home to great eSports competitions and competitors," CEO Michiel Bakker said in a statement.
There's no word on plans by Ginx to expand its eSports TV channel to the U.S. market.
