DOCTOR STRANGE: CANDYMAN’S TONY TODD NEARLY PLAYED DORMAMMU
“Doctor Strange” audiences may have been surprised to discover that star Benedict Cumberbatch pulled double duty in the film, playing both Marvel’s Master of the Mystic Arts and, utilizing motion-capture technology, his longtime nemesis Dread Dormammu. For director Scott Derrickson, it was a logical casting choice, as “one understood Dormammu better than Benedict did.”
However, another actor nearly had a hand in bringing the malevolent otherworldly entity to life: “Candyman” star Tony Todd.
In an interview with CBR, the actor revealed he was brought in by Marvel Studios for a six-hour voiceover session as Dormammu, only to find out just before “Doctor Strange’s” release that the filmmakers had opted for their original choice, Cumberbatch.
Although Todd referred to their decision as a “disappointment,” Todd explained, “I say this just to point out to everybody that you’ve got to roll and sway with all these punches and waves that come at you.”
While he’s a little disheartened he’ll never see his performance as Dormammu, Todd said there are always other roles. “Did I cry? No. I understood,” he said. “I was disappointed at the value that I lost — people going, ‘Dude, are you Dormammu?’ But there’ll be another Dormammu.”
Todd, whose career spans decades, has built an impressive list of voice credits, including that of Zoom on The CW’s “The Flash.” He has also voiced Darkseid on “LEGO DC Super Heroes: Justice League – Attack of the Legion of Doom!” and “LEGO DC Comics Super Heroes: Justice League vs. Bizarro League,” and Augustus Freeman/Icon on Cartoon Network’s “Young Justice.”
Fans will next be able to see him in such films as “The Witching Hour” and “West of Hell.” He’s also starring in the play “Sunset Baby” at TheaterWorks in Hartford, Connecticut.
Marvel Studios hasn’t announced plans for a “Doctor Strange” sequel, but Derrickson has expressed interest in returning for another crack at the Sorcerer Supreme. Cumberbatch will reprise his role as Stephen Strange in “Thor: Ragnarok” and “Avengers: Infinity War.”
Arriving on Blu-ray and DVD on Feb. 28, “Doctor Strange” also stars Chiwetel Ejiofor, Rachel McAdams, Benedict Wong, Michael Stuhlbarg, Benjamin Bratt, Scott Adkins, Mads Mikkelsen and Tilda Swinton.
