Lionsgate Places Emphasis on Over-the-Top Business With Executive Hire
The studio has tapped digital media veteran Julie Uhrman to oversee its suite of streaming services, including Tribeca Shortlist and Comic-Con HQ.
Lionsgate has tapped an experienced digital media executive to lead its growing suite of over-the-top streaming services.
The studio on Thursday announced it has appointed veteran gaming and virtual reality executive Julie Uhrman to the newly created position of executive vp and general manager of OTT ventures.
The new role will give Uhrman oversight of the newly launched Tribeca Shortlist and Comic-Con HQ streaming services. Lionsgate also is prepping the launch of Kevin Hart's Laugh Out Loud, which is planned as a millennial comedy destination, as well as a Spanish-language movie service.
Uhrman is being tasked with leading the strategy, rollout and growth of these platforms, and she will work closely with the management of the four current channels on content, curation and marketing strategies.
"Julie brings to the continued development of our streaming services great vision, entrepreneurial spirit and a strong track record of growing digital media platforms," Lionsgate CEO Jon Feltheimer said in a statement. "She is the perfect choice to round out an executive team with the complementary skills and vision to position our growing suite of online channels to serve next generation consumers around the world."
Uhrman, who began her career in investment banking before jumping to the digital space with a job at game publisher Vivendi, placed a big bet on the future of gaming in 2012 with the founding of Ouya, which developed a gaming system that operated on the Android platform. After slow sales, the company was ultimately wound down and its assets sold to Razer in 2015. Uhrman then made the jump to VR startup Jaunt, where she oversaw platform business development, partnerships and distribution for the company from February of this year until September.
She now joins a digital-focused team that has overseen the rollout of Lionsgate's OTT strategy.
"Lionsgate is a content powerhouse with a deep portfolio of films and television series and a strong focus on growth opportunities in the digital media landscape," said Uhrman. "With four platforms launched or planned, Lionsgate has already built great momentum in the OTT space. I'm delighted to join a team of visionary executives in helping these channels reach their full potential while we continue to identify exciting new opportunities."
