UNBELIEVABLE LADDER WAR, COLE VS. ELGIN, DRAGON LEE DEBUTS AND MORE: COMPLETE ROH ALL STAR EXTRAVAGANZA PPV COVERAGE
By Mike Johnson on 2016-09-30 20:26:00
Welcome to PWInsider.com's live, ongoing coverage of Ring of Honor All Star Extravaganza 2016 from Lowell, MA at the Lowell Memorial Auditorium. The PPV will air on all PPV providers and will stream on The Fite App (which you can use to stream from your phone to your TV via a Roku Box).
The PPV started with a great video featuring the ROH stars talking about destiny and being all stars. It closed with ROH champion Adam Cole declaring he was "THE star."
Kevin Kelly and Steve Corino welcomed everyone to the PPV and ran down the lineup for the main events.
My stream on the Fite App is PERFECT by the way. I am streaming it to my HD TV via my Roku and it's as good as if I had ordered the show via traditional PPV means.
ROH TV champion Bobby Fish vs. Dijak with Prince Nana
Dijak was accompanied by the New England Wrestling Academy, with Kelly noting they helped prepared him for the match. Big "Dijak" chant early in his hometown market. The Academy had a flag for him and everything, similar to UFC entrances and ring introductions.
They shook hands but they didn't break. Fish stepped up on the ropes to go face to face with Dijak. Fish tested him early with a kick to the legs. Fish jawed he was going to take out Dijak's spindly legs. He went for a high cross bodyblock but was caught and drilled with several knees. Fish slipped out and locked in a choke. He broke it and drilled Dijak in the corner with a running knee but was caught with a discus boot for a two count. He followed up with several other pinfall attempts.
Dijak kicked away at Fish in the corner. Dijak grabbed Fish and lifted him for a suplex, releasing the TV champion and sending him across the ring for another two count. Dijak channeled his best Chris Hero, utilizing a cravate to wear down Fish. Fish scored with several knees and kicks to the legs to force a release and Dijak grabbed at his leg. Fish shoulderblocked him back into the corner. Fish drilled him with a running smash and followed up with a high knee in the corner.
Fish used a dragonscrew legwhip and locked in a kneebar. Dijak was able to break it and did his finisher, The Feast Your Eyes, a Torture Rack into a knee, but began selling that he hurt his knee with the move. It was the same knee that Fish had been working on earlier. Fish was able to get his foot on the ropes to break the pinfall. The crowd thought that might have been the finish.
Dijak began climbing to the top on his bad leg and missed a twisting moonsault off the top. Fish and Dijak battled back and forth. Fish rolled Dijak into another kneebar. Dijak was able to make the ropes. He went for Feast Your Eyes but Fish slid over his back and cinched in a rear naked choke. Dijak tried to battle out but was trapped on the mat. The referee ruled Dijak couldn't defend himself and called for the bell.
Your winner and still ROH TV champion Bobby Fish!
Match was decent but I don't think ever got out of first gear. Some of the transitions were really good on the mat though. You could feel the crowd sort of lose their energy when Dijak lost as they were BIGTIME behind their hometown guy.
Kevin Kelly and Steve Corino previewed the four way tag bout. They noted Nigel McGuinness would join them later.
Cary Silkin was sitting ringside with Bobby Cruise. Always nice to see him still popping up.
All Night Express vs. Dalton Castle & Colt Cabana vs. War Machine vs. Shane Taylor & Keith Lee for future ROH Tag Team championship.
Caprice Coleman began cutting a promo saying the Cabinet was protesting the Code of Honor and they were going to kneel. War Machine began brawling with Lee and Taylor. All Night Express did a dive to the outside. Cabana and Castle teased one but instead played to the crowd. Caprice Coleman joined the announcers.
Kenny King and Raymond Rowe officially started. King teased tagging into Taylor and Lee but drilled Rowe instead. The idea was that War Machine was so focuse on Lee and Taylor, they were leaving themselves open to the others. Titus and Castle tagged in and faced off. Cabana and Castle doubleteamed him. Cabana nailed some clubbering elbows, leaving the dazed Titus to be nailed with a belly to back suplex for a two count. After a series of quick tags, Cabana and Castle ended up against each other, which made NO sense. They teased facing off. Castle then went down to the mat and Cabana covered him but everyone else broke it up.
War Machine and Taylor and Lee brawled on the floor. Titus nailed a big splash off the ropes for a two count on Castle. Lots of frenzied action. Keith Lee's strength was spotlighted and boy he is a frightening man. That the set up Castle hitting a big belly to back suplex on him to show how strong Castle is. Keith Lee then hit a big flip dive to the floor on everyone, which was even more scary. Hanson then did a big flip off the top rope to the floor. They missed it live as they were showing a replay but then showed that move as a replay.
Back in the ring, Castle scored the pin on Titus with the spinning facefirst whirlybird.
Your winners and new top contenders for the ROH Tag Team championship, Dalton Castle and Colt Cabana!
Entertaining bout with some fun action, almost too much at times as the cameras missed a few moments. Castle and Cabana together are dynamite. Keith Lee is a star caliber and Shane Taylor moves great for a guy of his size. Good stuff.
Nigel McGuiness joined the announcers and admitted making the Ladder War might be something he regrets, he felt it had to be done. He said the Tag belts will be around two men's waist tonight.
Dragon Lee vs. Kaimatachi
Kaimatachi came out carrying the mask he previouisly lost to Dragon Lee as a way for the announcers to give some background on the feud. Lee's shoulder is all taped up.
Lee offered his hand. Kaimatachi charged out but was caught with kicks and chops. Lee knocked Kaimatachi to the floor and hit a nice suicide dive. Kaimatachi caught him with a sunset flip powerbomb to the floor, then pulled him up and powerbombed him again to the floor. He followed up with a running dropkick off the apron to the floor. He grabbed Lee and rudely tossed him over the barricade into the floor. He worked over Lee on the floor with chops and then rossed him back into the ringside area. Kaimatachi dove back into the ring ringside with a dropkick. Kaimatachi is looking great so far.
Back in the ring, Kaimatachi covered Lee for a two count. Kaimatachi went for a move but Lee nailed a dropkick, sent Kaimatachi to the floor and then hit a big flip dive over the top to the floor. The crowd is loving the highspots early. Lee came back and set up Kaimatachi, who was hanging off the apron outide, and drilled him off the ropes with a nasty doublestomp.
Lee worked over Kaimatachi in the corner and went for another doublestomp but missed. He rolled through and was caught with a dropkick. Lee rolled to the outside and nailed a back senton splash off the top onto Lee, who was in a standing position. The referee counted them both out but they each returned at the 19 count. They battled back and forth. Lee nailed a standing rana but Kaimatachi rolled through. Lots of near falls. You can hear the crowd is enjoying it.
Lee drilled Kaimatachi in the corner with a hard chop. They battled in the corner. Kaimatachi used a twist into a forward roll bomb for a two count. Lee caught Kaimatachi with an awesome German suplex. Really good back and forth action. Lee snapped on a Fujiwara armbar and maneuvered that into another submission. Kaimatachi was able to escape to the outside but was hit with a leaping rana over the ropes to the floor. Just killer stuff.
Lee nailed a Northern Lights suplex, then another, then powered Kaimatachi into a brainbuster for a two count. Kaimatachi caught Lee during a Phoenixplex attempt and turned it into a Canadian Destroyer for a two count. Lee avoided being smashed into the buckles and chopped Kaimatachi. Lee worked him over and nailed another double stomp off the ropes. Lee went for a powerbomb but it was turned into a Code Red. Kaimatachi nailed a DVDR into the buckles. Lee caught him with a leaping knee to the face.
Lee nailed the Phoenixplex, which looked NASTY, and scored the pin. Kaimatachi looked like he was dropped on the top of his head.
Your winner, Dragon Lee!
Really fun match. Lee and Kaimatachi were positioned similar to Super Crazy and Tajiri in ECW, just international rivals who go all out with good athletic matches trying to beat the others. ROH could turn the feud into an attraction if they have the chance to take it around to different markets. Just a nutty match. My favorite match thus far.
Hangman Page vs. Kyle O'Reilly
Kyle O'Reilly worked over Page's arm early. Page cut him off by slamming him on the outside of the apron. Page looks so comfortable in his current role.
Page peppered him with right hands to the face. Page controlled O'Reilly and nailed him with a nice looking snap powerslam into the buckles. O"Reilly fought back and locked in a figure four but Page made it to the ropes. They battled on the apron but Page drilled him and sent him to the floor. Page went for a running shooting star to the floor but almost didn't make the rotation and was really lucky.
Kyle came back with several stiff kicks. Page fired back but was nailed with the Axe Kick. Page went for a piledriver but was backdropped over and Kyle slid over tried to go for a rear naked choke. Page tried to guard it but Kyle extended it into an armbar and Page immediately tapped.
Your winner, Kyle O'Reilly!
Kyle attacks O'Reilly and sent him into the barricade. He used a chair and wrapped Kyle's arm up in it, then sent him into the ringpost. The announcers were playing up that Page actually tapped to lull Kyle into a false sense of security so he could attack him instead. I liked the logic.
Short but hard fought match. Page has gotten into "the zone" in his current role and plays a great 1980s style heel. O'Reilly's timing and his mat skills are great. A good first chapter.
Kevin Kelly interviewed Silas Young on the stage. He said that he and Beer City Bruiser weren't able to find a partner and ROH has told him that they wouldn't be allowed to compete in the six man tournament. He said that a few years ago, he was happy just to have earned the opportunity to compete with the best athletes wrestling had to offer. He said that he had slowly earned the right to become the ROH champion. He said that nothing was handed to him and like everything else in his life, he earned it by winning the Honor Rumble a few weeks ago. He said unlike most who complain, he was happy and thrived to be the first man in the Honor Rumble and said he was happy to be the last one. He said that he didn't care who was champion, because he was going to win the belt on 10/22 in Florida and promised to enter Final Battle as champion.
ROH Six Man Tag Team championship Tournament: ACH & KUSHIDA & Jay White vs. Briscoes & Toru Yano.
They talked great six man tag teams at the onset, naming the Freebirds, Dusty & The Road Warriors, and The Von Erichs.
Mark Briscoe and ACH started out and had some nice back and forth action early before they faced off. KUSHIDA and Yano tagged in. Yano did some of his silly stuff, calling for a break. KUSHIDA still nailed a nice hiptoss. Jay White and Jay Briscoe tagged in and they faced off. White controlled him until being nailed with a headbutt.
The Briscoes nailed a series of double team maneuverson White in the corner. ACH and KUSHIDA got involved. Jay nailed the Cactus clothesline over the top, sending them both careening to the floor. Briscoe nailed a dive to the outside, wiping out White and ACH. Yano used the distraction to remove one of the top turnbuckles. Mark ripped at White in the corner. Yano drilled White with the turnbuckle cover as the referee was distracted.
Yano was whipped into the exposed buckle. KUSHIDA nailed the Briscoes and took them out. He went to kick Yano but it was caught. He came back with a nice dropkick. KUSHIDA went up and over and hiptossed Yano, then went for an armbar on Yano, who kicked his way to the ropes. KUSHIDA continued to work on the arm but was nailed.
Mark Briscoe tagged in and caught KUSHIDA with a Side Russian Legsweep. The Briscoes worked over KUSHIDA, who tried to fight them off. He caught them with a double springboard elbow and crawled his way to the corner to tag ACH. ACH nailed a nice enziguiri and then hit a crazy springboard dive to the floor on The Briscoes and Yano. He woked over Mark in the corner but Jay slipped in with a series of jabs. ACH's striking and fluid motions in the ring were spotlighted.
White nailed a charging uppercut in the corner and then nailed a missile dropkick off the ropes. The battled contunued back and forth. Jay nailed a neckbreaker on White for a two count. ACH hit the ring to help but was clobbered with a clothesline. Briscoe went for the Jay-Driller but KUSHIDA broke it. Jay nailed a DVDR followed by a Mark elbow off the ropes on White, but White kicked up. They played it up as a big deal.
Yano slammed White and nailed a catapult on him, sending him into a double superkick for a two count. Mark was sent to the floor by White, who then nailed Jay with a DDT. Yano went for a lowblow but KUSHIDA stopped it. White nailed a Uranage on White. KUSHIDA hit a dive to the outside on the Briscoes. ACH nailed a big 450 splash on Yano and scored the pin.
Your winners, advancing, ACH & KUSHIDA & Jay White!
Good back and forth tag match.
Jay Lethal vs. Tetsuya Naito with EVIL.
Naito attacked Bobby Cruise as he was introducing Lethal. Poor Bobby!
Lethal hit the ring but was overwhelmed early. On the floor, Lethal sent him into the barricade and hit a great tope to the floor. Jay brought Naito back in the ring and lit him up with chops. Lethal nailed a series of chops and punches but was caught with springboard into a tornado DDT. Naito worked him over until being caught with the Lethal Combination.
Lethal caught Naito with a pair of belly to back suplexes, then lifted Naito for another. Lethal nailed a top rope elbow for a two count. Naito fought back and nailed a missile dropkick. Naito nailed a top rope rana for another two count. Naito nailed a side slam for a two count. Naito went for Destino but was stopped with an Ace Cutter. Lethal went for the Lethal Injection but was caught with a rolling kick. Lethal nailed a big kick and both went down.
Lethal stomped at EVIL's hands on the outside and was caught with a nice rollup. He kicked out and was able to trap Naito in a crossface. EVIL pulled the referee out of the ring and stomped the hell out of Jay. If that was the finish, pretty lame. EVIL caught Lethal in the corner with a clothesline. Naio and EVIL worked over Jay. They went for a press-slam but Lethal landed on his feet and nailed a superkick on EVIL. Lethal nailed the Ace Crusher off the second rope and referee Paul Turner returned to the ring and counted two.
They battled on the top. Naito raked Lethal's eyes and went for a powerbomb. Lethal countered and scored with the Lethal Injection and scored the pin.
Your winner, Jay Lethal!
Big win for Lethal in a good match.
Very interesting to see two New Japan talents losing clean to ROH talents.
ROH champion Adam Cole cut a promo saying that in 2010, he and Elgin both started in wrestling together. He said there was a time where he respected Elgin, until the night Elgin beat him for the ROH title. He said Elgin showed his true colors and had the belt for a cup of coffee, then ran to Japan because he couldn't hang. Cole said that he stayed and fought and went through surgery after surgery. He said that tonight he gets to right a wrong and show that Elgin was never in his league. Great promo.
ROH champ Adam Cole vs. Michael Elgin.
They locked up and Elgin powered Cole into the corner. Cole was very aggressive but Elgin was too powerful early. Cole went down low and drilled Elgin's knee. He played to the crowd which allowed Elgin to catch him out of nowhere with a big powerslam. Kelly actually called it like there was going to be a new champion early.
Cole cut off Elgin but couldn't get him up for a suplex. Elgin tried to reverse but Cole landed on his feet. Cole went to the outside. Elgin tried to pull him up for a suplex but Cole slipped out and superkicked his knee, while he was on the turnbuckles. The announcers said that Elgin has been having issues with his knee. Well, those troubles continued as Cole focused on it and worked him over by the ringpost.
Back in the ring, Cole worked over Elgin's knee, trying to hyperextend the knee. Elgin fought back and nailed an enziguiri but hurt his knee nailing it. He hit the Falcon Arrow but Cole kicked out. Elgin was caught with a leg lariat for a two count. Cole charged at Elgin but was caught with a kick. Elgin nailed a German suplex into the buckles, with the back of his head smacking every buckle on the way down.
Elgin wentn to the top but was nailed by Cole. Elgin fell into the tree of woe. Cole nailed a series of kicks and then cinched in the figure four leglock. Elgin could hardly put any weight on his knee. Cole was backdropped. Elgin nailed a Canadian Destroyer into a sunset flip position, slamming the champ down on the back of his head. Elgin nailed a Bucklebomb. He went for another but Cole turned it into a reverse rana.
Cole nailed his own Canadian Destroyer for a two count. Cole nailed a series of hot moves including the Last Shot for a close near fall. Cole locked in another figure four leglock. Elgin broke it with a series of stiff slaps to the face. Elgin nailed some stiff shots, including a backfist. Elgin went for another but Cole pulled the referee in the way. That killed Elgin's momentum and Cole attacked, nailed a series of shining wizards and hit the Last Shot to score the pin.
Your winner and still ROH champion, Adam Cole!
Good match. They told a nice story with the knee coming back to haunt Elgin.
It was really obvious over the course of the show that the micing of the crowd when it came to the crowd audio isn't great. This was probably one of the biggest victims here as you could see they were working hard and the crowd was reacting but the audio for the crowd was low.
There are ladders all around the ring. Everyone began brawling. I will do my best to keep up with this but I expect this to be tons of nutty stuff. The Guns and the Bucks ended up going for kicks at the same time and got caught up. They all backed off to escape the others. The Addiction brought chairs into the ring but were both superkicked by the Bucks.
Nick Jackson nailed the Faceplant on Shelley. The Addiction tried to nail Matt Jackson with a ladder but he ducked and slammed it against the barricade. The Bucks caught everyone with a big dive. The Bucks slid a ladder into the ring but Shelley stomped on it as they opened it, slamming their hands. The Bucks unloaded with all their synchronized double team spots. They then drilled Christopher Daniels in the face with a ladder. The audience chanted for the Bucks.
The Machineguns took control and drilled Daniels, who took some stiff bumps on a ladder. Several tables were set up on the side of the ring. Sabin and Nick Jackson battled on one of the ladders. Daniels returned to the fray bleeding above the eye. The Bucks superkicked a ladder into The Addiction, who were looking to wield it as a weapon.
Matt Jackson powerbombed Daniels on a ladder. He then held the ladder up horizontally, hanging it off the ropes, allowing Nick Jackson to nail a swanton onto it. Daniels was taking a lot of punishment. The Bucks set up a structure made up of pieces of the barricade on the outside. Kazarian tried to get up the ladder but was stopped by the Bucks. Kazarian and Nick Jackson battled on the top of the ladder and Kazarian nailed a swinging cutter off the ladder, which was nuts.
Sabin and Shelley returned to the battle and sent Matt Jackson hard into a ladder. Jackson ducked a kick and tried Sabin into kicking Shelley. There was an INSANE series of spots that saw tables shattered on the outside. It was just insanely perfect when it came to timing and sick spots. Matt Jackson was backdropped high out of the ring through a table. Daniels nailed a urnage on Sabin It culminated with Nick Jackson hitting a 450 splash off the top through a table on Kazarian. Daniels was bleeding pretty bad and Kazarian was cut from either his ear or the back of his head. Sabin was bleeding from the arm as well.
All three teams set up ladders in the center of the ring and brawled atop of the ladders. Two of the ladders were taken out. Nick Jackson knocked Kazarian down and was left. He went for the belts but the Guns and The Addiction lifted the ladder up and carried him to the side of the ring then dumped him and he took an EVIL bump through a table to the floor. These guys are earning hazard pay. This has been downright brutal.
Shelley was drilled int a ladder with an STO and smashed his face HARD. Daniels was trapped inside a ladder and beaten half to death. The Guns set up a ladder and climbed to retrieve the belts but the Bucks attacked them. The Bucks nailed stereo superkicks. Kazarian went for a springboard move but was superkicked by Matt Jackson, who was on a ladder. The Bucks wiped out everyone with superkicks. Daniels was superkicked off the apron and crashed backwards into the ring barricade set up. That had to suck.
Shelley went for Sliced Bread #2 but Matt Jackson caught him in a tombstone position. Nick Jackson was tipped off a ladder, hit the ropes and springboarded off the ropes into the Indytaker on the floor. The Bucks went to the top of the ladders but Kamaitachi hit the ring and shoved over the ladder. Daniels nailed Angel's Wings on Sabin. Shelley was placed on a table on the floor. Kamaitachi went to the top to dive off, but Jay White ran out and attacked him. He shoved Kamaitachi off the top through the table. The Addiction attacked White and suplexed him out of the ring through the table.
Daniels nailed a Uranage and hitn the Best Moonsault Ever on Matt Jackson. Nick Jackson was placed on a table in the corner. Matt Jackson and Daniels battled atop the ladder. Daniels teased Angel's Wings but instead took one of the craziest backdrops ever, crashing down on a ladder below. Kazarian battled Matt as Nick tried to climb the ladder. It ended up with Nick diving off the ladder as they spiked Kazarian through a table with another Indy Taker.
The Bucks climbed to the top of the ladder and removed the belts.
Your winners and new ROH Tag Team champions The Young Bucks!
Just an incredible WAR. Off the charts stuff. If you like insane bumps and really insane creativity, this is one for you. Far and away one of the best ROH matches of 2016. I had originally intended to drive up for the show but then I decided not to do the five hour drive. This match makes me really regret that decision. You have to respect the hell out of what all six of these men left in the ring. There were a few times I was legitimately scared for them and you really should go out of your way to see this match ASAP.

Lethal nailed the Ace Crusher off the second rope and referee Paul Turner returned to the ring and counted two.
