Word is out that the demonic creature PUMPKINHEAD is about to be unleashed from the grave once more. That’s right: SAW franchise executive producer Peter Block told Clark Collis at Entertainment Weekly that he plans to start shooting a remake of Stan Winston’s classic creature feature in 2017.
Block explained while there will be similarities of plot and theme, his film will not be a “point-by-point” copy of the original, ala PSYCHO or POLTERGEIST remakes. Instead, Block claims that the production will “[enhance] the setting, and [expand on] the characters somewhat,to give it a different kind of experience.” Luckily, fans of the PUMPKINHEAD franchise won’t have to catch this remake on television or on VOD, as Block plans for the reboot to be a theatrical release.
The original film, which featured the creature effects from Stan Winston in his directorial debut, starred genre vet Lance Henriksen as a vengeance-seeking father who summons an rural demon when his son is accidentally killed by thrill-seeking teenagers. However, as the horror begins to unfold, the father realizes the great cost that comes with unleashing PUMPKINHEAD, and the greater sacrifice it will take to put a stop to the bloodthirsty monster.
As far as the remake goes, there’s still a lot of potentially exciting production developments that haven’t yet occurred, such as a director or cast. But he did tell Entertainment Weekly that he’s looking for “somebody who really understands why the first one is terrific, the emotional beats of ‘Is the revenge you seek worse than whatever befell you in the first place?’” Block is being mindful of today’s horror fans as he searches, looking for a director “that wants to embrace what I think audiences really want these days- a really scary, fun thrill-ride.” One thing Block has decided on is writer Nate Atkins, with whom he has created a script he described as “really solid.”
Block also stressed his commitment to “using as much practical effects as possible,” saying that “that was the great thing about the original.” Block expressed his intentions to stay true to Winston’s legendary aesthetic and design, saying the new demon won’t be “some amorphous, nebulous, wispy thing. You’re going to know it came from the PUMPKINHEAD family lineage.” Stay tuned for more on the PUMPKINHEAD remake here at FANGORIA.com!
