‘X-Men: Apocalypse’ Launches With Massive $103.3 Million Internationally
Fox’s “X-Men: Apocalypse” has launched impressively in the international marketplace with $103.3 million in box office havoc from 20,596 screens in 75 markets — a week ahead of its U.S. opening.
It’s the number one film in 71 markets this weekend, led by the U.K. with $10.5 million at 1,602 sites, followed by Mexico ($8.6 million from 2,676), Brazil ($6.6 million from 1,277), Russia ($6.5 million from 1,208) and France ($5.9 million at 792).
The launch featured the biggest Fox opening weekend ever in half a dozen markets including Philippines ($4.9 million), India ($3.5 million), Indonesia ($3.1 million), Singapore ($3 million), Thailand ($2.7 million) and Colombia ($1.9 million).
Showings at 3D locations accounted for 41% of the gross. RealD locations took in $18.4 million, while 246 Imax screens took in with $5 million in 57 markets.
In the movie, the fate of the Earth hangs in the balance as Jennifer Lawrence’s Raven-Mystique and Professor X (James McAvoy) lead a team of young X-Men to stop Apocalypse (Oscar Isaac) and the Four Horsemen. It’s directed by Bryan Singer from a screenplay by Simon Kinberg.
The cast includes Michael Fassbender, Nicholas Hoult, Rose Byrne, Tye Sheridan, Sophie Turner, Olivia Munn and Lucas Till. Lawrence confirmed recently that “Apocalypse” will be her last film in the franchise.
Neither Ian McKellen nor Patrick Stewart returned as Magneto and Professor X, respectively.
The markets in release this weekend represent about 64% of the international marketplace for “Apocalypse.” South Korea opens Wednesday and China opens on June 3.
Sony’s “The Angry Birds Movie” grossed $55.5 million from over 24,000 screens as it expanded into China, South Korea and seven other new markets. The animated film family has hit $112 million internationally in two weeks.
China led the way with $29.2 million from 12,000 screens, 24% ahead of the opening for “Zootopia” in that market and the biggest 2016 debut for an imported animated film. South Korea and the Netherlands launched with $1.5 million each.
“Angry Birds” generated impressive holdover business in the U.K. with a decline of only 5% to $2.9 million. Russia added $2.6 million its second weekend to bring its total to $9.5 million.
Disney’s “Captain America: Civil War” came in third on the international chart, pulling in $30.7 million to lift its foreign total to $706 million. The tentpole’s worldwide total has hit $1.05 billion — 19th highest of all time.
South Korea’s “The Wailing” finished fourth with $11.1 million in its second weekend, followed by “The Divergent Series: Allengiant” with $11 million in six markets to lift the dystopian drama to $105.3 million internationally. “Allegiant” grossed $66 million in the U.S.
