Amazon Takes 'Fleabag,' U.K. Comedy From 'Broadchurch' Actress, for U.S.
Phoebe Waller-Bridge wrote and stars in the half-hour sitcom about a sharp-witted young woman trying to make it in London.
Amazon has picked up Fleabag, a British comedy written by and starring British actress Phoebe Waller-Bridge, for its U.S. Prime Video service.
The show features the Broadchurch alum as a young woman, angry, guilt-riddled but also sexual and dry-witted, trying to make her way in London. Waller-Bridge based the half-hour sitcom on her play of the same name, which won an Edinburgh Fringe First Award as well as Critics' Circle and Off-West End awards for most promising playwright last year.
“Rarely does talent as special as Phoebe Waller-Bridge appear,” Joe Lewis, Amazon’s head of half-hour series, said Thursday in a statement. “From writing to acting, Fleabag is as compelling as Phoebe’s talents are undeniable. We’re excited to let customers laugh, cry and occasionally watch things get real awkward.”
Amazon plans to premiere Fleabag on Prime Video in the U.S. this fall.
“I’m over the moon to be working with Amazon on Fleabag,” Waller-Bridge said in a statement. “They are true risk-takers and it’s incredibly exciting to be alongside the other amazing shows they are creating. This character is very close to my heart and I’m thrilled that she gets to cause mischief on both sides of the pond. I never imagined in a million years Amazon would be ordering something from me.”
Fleabag co-stars Brett Gelman (Twin Peaks), Olivia Colman (Peep Show), Bill Paterson (Outlander) and Hugh Dennis (Outnumbered). Harry Bradbeer (Dickensian) directed the first season, which was produced by Jack and Harry Williams of Two Brothers Pictures, producers of The Missing.
All3media International is handling international sales on the series.
