Billed as a cross between a subscription service and an online magazine, Nowave – which clearly targets the hard-core cinephile crowd – will explore a different theme each month through a selection of curated films, including rarely seen works or theatrically unreleased pics which have however screened at top international fests. The plan is to tie-in the monthly movie offerings with editorial content featuring personalities from the international art and fashion worlds, novelists, chefs, and journos holding forth on the pics that have inspired their lives and careers. The first theme to be explored will be the concept of “Liquidity,” taking its cue from the buzz that Hong Kong helmer Stephen Chow’s “The Mermaid” is getting around the world after becoming China’s all-time top box office hit. Nowave is in talks with IM Global for the pic’s SVOD rights. Based in Toulouse, France, Nowave is founded by Bérengère Dastarac-Waked who dabbled in production on Egyptian drama “Winter of Discontent,” which went to Venice. She has recruited a network of professionals as partners comprising French tech entrepreneur Benjamin Böhle-Roitelet, agent Daniel Ziskind, Cannes Critics’ Week collaborator Anne-Laure Bell, and producer Marianne Lere.
