Netflix Takes World Rights To ‘Marcella’ Crime Drama Starring Anna Friel – MIPTV
Netflix has acquired exclusive worldwide streaming rights to crime series Marcella from Hans Rosenfeldt, creator of the original Swedish/Danish co-production The Bridge (Bron). The eight-part drama, sold by Cineflix Rights, premieres tonight on ITV in the UK and will be available globally, outside the UK and Ireland, on Netflix beginning July 1.
Anna Friel (Limitless), Laura Carmichael (Downton Abbey), Nicholas Pinnock (Fortitude), Sinéad Cusack (Jekyll & Hyde) and Harry Lloyd (Game Of Thrones) lead the cast.
Produced by Buccaneer Media for ITV and co-created by Nicola Larder (The Tunnel), the show delves into the psychology of the troubled detective Marcella (Friel) as she investigates a serial murder case upon returning to duty after a 10-year hiatus.
This is Rosenfeldt’s first drama for the UK which will be injected with his Scandinavian noir style. Executive-producer is Buccaneer Media’s Tony Wood. Directors include Charles Martin (Being Human, Skins, The Returned), Jonathan Teplitzky (Broadchurch, The Railway Man’) and Henrik Georgsson (The Bridge, Wallander).
The agreement with Netflix was struck by Cineflix Rights, the sales and distribution division of Cineflix Media Inc, which holds exclusive international distribution rights to Marcella.
Glen Salzman, co-founder and co-CEO of Cineflix Media, says, “Netflix is the perfect international home for Marcella. Created by an exceptionally talented team who have produced powerful, thought-provoking global hits, Marcella is the perfect example of the kind of premium scripted content that Cineflix will be looking to distribute going forward.”
