MipTV: Molotov Inks Deal With Canal Plus Group, Sets Up Public Launch
Molotov, the disruptive, digital TV service co-founded by AlloCine creator Jean-David Blanc, Cannes film festival’s prexy Pierre Lescure and former TF1 exec Jean-Marc Denoual, has inked a deal with Canal Plus Group to distribute all of its free-to-air and pay TV channels.
Molotov, which was conceived as the Spotify of television, is now set to publicly launch on July 11 with more than 100 French and international nets on board.
Under its pact with Canal Plus Group, Molotov will distribute D8, D17 and news channels iTélé, as well as seven premium cinema channels from Ciné Plus.
Molotov will be available for free and accessible on all screens including computers, smartphones, tablets and connected TVs. An innovative model, Molotov allow users to stream live TV programs and sort content based on individual tastes, favorite actors, TV shows, movie genres or friends’ recommendations.
“After months of hard work, user tests and analyses, we are very pleased to offer a new television experience this summer. One that is free and fully focused on what viewers expect from television in the 21st century,” said Blanc, who added that traditional TV was far from over. “More than ever, we are convinced that television has an outstanding value proposition, provided it is delivered through the right user experience,” added the exec.
Lescure, who now presides Cannes Film Festival and is best known as the co-founder of Canal Plus, said “the arrival of the Canal Plus Group channels reinforces (he and his partners’) vision of the evolution of television distribution.”
Lescure added that Molotov “meets the needs of today, and particularly the Millennials.”
Next up, Molotov aims to expand its model internationally and is in the process of raising funds overseas.
