Tribeca Film Festival Launches New TV Programming with ‘Roots,’ ‘Time Traveling Bong’
Tribeca Film Festival continues its expansion across platforms with Tribeca Tune In, a new section of TV programming that this year will include premieres of the History Channel’s upcoming redux of “Roots” with Forest Whitaker and Laurence Fishburne, TNT’s “Animal Kingdom” with Ellen Barkin, OWN’s “Greenleaf” with Oprah Winfrey and Comedy Central’s “Time Traveling Bong.”
The festival, now in its 15th year, has in recent years made a point of growing its programming to include storytelling distributed across multiple kinds of screens. The new TV initiative stands alongside several new-media showcases that include Storyscapes, a subset of the festival’s main slate encompassing digital and multiplatform work. (Last year the festival presented a handful of TV offerings including episodes of “Mr. Robot” and “Inside Amy Schumer.”)
Winfrey will turn up at the screening of megachurch drama “Greenleaf,” in which she plays a recurring role. Other shows getting pre-broadcast bows include HBO’s crime drama “The Night Of,” with John Turturro, and “The Night Manager,” the AMC-BBC co-production starring Tom Hiddleston (for which Hiddleston and director Susanne Bier will appear at the fest). Episodes of Netflix series “Grace and Frankie” and “Chef’s Table” as well as the season-three finale of Comedy Central’s “Broad City” will also screen as part of Tribeca Tune In.
The festival will look to draw fans with conversations with TV creatives including the creators and stars of “The Good Wife” (along with a screening of that night’s episode), as well as the names behind Amazon series “Catastrophe” and Samantha Bee’s late night show “Full Frontal.” There will also be a screening of Adam Nimoy’s feature documentary “For the Love of Spock,” about Leonard Nimoy and his iconic “Star Trek” character, as well as a screening of the finale of “Six Feet Under” with live commentary from Alan Ball.
The 2016 Tribeca Film Festival runs April 13-24.
