Box Office: ‘Deadpool’ Soars Past $600 Million Globally, R-Rated Record in Sight
There’s no stopping the “Merc with a Mouth.”
“Deadpool” continued to dominate the foreign box office this weekend, picking up $40 million to push the comic-book movie’s global haul past $600 million globally and nab first place on the overseas charts. The red spandex-wearing superhero now has a very good chance of overtaking Neo and “The Matrix Reloaded’s” $742 million worldwide haul to become the highest-grossing R-rated film in history.
Disney’s “Zootopia” continued to build up a head of steam going into its domestic launch next weekend. The animated film about a city filled with anthropomorphic animals pulled in $30 million in its third weekend of overseas release for a second place finish. It has now screened in more than 40% of the international marketplace, generating $81.4 million to date.
Chinese blockbuster “The Mermaid” is still padding its record, nabbing third place at the foreign box office, earning $28 million. The fantasy comedy has grossed $485 million to become the biggest Chinese film in history, easily surpassing the high-water mark of “Monster Hunt,” which earned $374 million last year.
Fantasy adventure “Gods of Egypt” failed to find salvation with foreign audiences after flopping at the domestic box office. The $140 million epic picked up $24.2 million from 69 territories, including such major markets as Russia and Brazil. That’s a poor start for a film with such a hefty price tag.
Rounding out the top five, “The Revenant” added $14.1 million to its total, pushing the survival drama past the $400 million mark worldwide. The story of a wounded fur trapper who braves the wilderness to take revenge on the men who left him for dead is up for 12 Academy Awards and is seen as the front-runner for best picture at this Sunday’s Oscar ceremony.
