Star Wars: The Force Awakens is just the beginning of Lucasfilm and Disney's enormous efforts for the famed franchise. Aside from ongoing television series and comic books, we have annual film releases to look forward to -- not all of them necessarily centered on the Skywalker family, either.
This is everything we know about the upcoming Star Wars films -- including the spinoff Anthology stories occupying the space between Force Awakens sequels.
Rogue One: A Star Wars Story
Directed by Gareth Edwards
Written by Gary Whitta, Chris Weitz
Release Date: December 16, 2016
Director Gareth Edwards explained that Rogue One will be more "real" than the mainline Star Wars films, drawing inspiration from Saving Private Ryan, Black Hawk Down, and Zero Dark Thirty.
The heist picture tells the story of how the Rebel Alliance stole the Death Star plans from the Galactic Empire.
This will be the first Star Wars film not composed by John Williams. Academy Award-winner Alexandre Desplat, who scored Harry Potter and The Deathly Hallows as well as Godzilla, will bring music to Rogue One.
Darth Vader is rumored to also play a role in the film.
Gary Whitta wrote the first draft of Rogue One's script, which ended up in the hands of Chris Weitz (Cinderella, About a Boy). Rumor has it that Oscar winner Christopher McQuarrie (Mission: Impossible - Rogue Nation, The Usual Suspects) also did a pass on the script.
At Star Wars Celebration Anaheim, Lucasfilm unveiled the first teasers for Rogue One. Concept art showed ground troops storming out of ships and into the rain, while the teaser trailer showcased the stunning scale of the Death Star near a planet.
Lucasfilm debuted the first official Rogue One cast photo at D23, featuring stars Felicity Jones, Diego Luna, Riz Ahmed, Donnie Yen, and more. You can learn more about the cast with IGN's Who's Who in Rogue One: A Star Wars story feature
Speaking of Donnie Yen, the Ip Man actor published (and quickly removed) an image to his Instagram showing off never-before-seen helmets that have a very rugged Stormtrooper look to them.
Hannibal star Mads Mikkelsen is also in Rogue One. His character may be called Galen, and he certainly won't be a villain. Check out his thoughts on joining the Star Wars universe.
Rogue One also stars Alan Tudyk, the Firefly actor who walked away from Uncharted 4: A Thief's End.
Riz Ahmed's character could be named Bodhi Rook.
The first unofficial set photos show a crash-landed ship, dead Stormtroopers, and more.
Star Wars: Episode 8
Written and Directed by Rian Johnson
Release Date: December 15, 2017
Following rumors of a script rewrite, Disney pushed the release of Star Wars: Episode VIII back from May to December.
The sequel to The Force Awakens is rumored to have two female leads, although Orphan Black star Tatiana Maslany appears to be out of the running. That leaves two other notable possibilities we know of -- Gina Rodriguez and Olivia Cook -- potentially taking on a new role. Concussion's Gugu Mbatha-Raw is also said to be up for the film.
Benicio Del Toro will reportedly play the villain.
According to Finn actor John Boyega, Star Wars: Episode VIII will be darker than The Force Awakens, with Finn having a more "physical" role. The story will focus on the Skywalker family, so much so that Prequel Trilogy star Hayden Christensen is rumored to return as Anakin Skywalker.
Mark Hamill filmed additional scenes on Skellig Michael -- where we find Luke at the end of The Force Awakens -- for Episode 8 in 2015.
Lucasfilm's Kathleen Kennedy stated that the full cast from The Force Awakens would return in Star Wars: Episode 8. At the time, the death of Han Solo was not known, so whether or not that includes Harrison Ford is yet to be confirmed.
Episode 8 is set to answer many new key questions, perhaps including Rey's lineage.
Han Solo Anthology Film
Written by Lawrence and Jon Kasdan
Directed by Phil Lord and Chris Miller
Release Date: May 25, 2018
The LEGO Movie directors will helm what may be the last Star Wars film written by Lawrence Kasdan, who wrote The Force Awakens, The Empire Strikes Back, and Return of the Jedi. Kasdan is writing the film with his son, Jon.
Lord and Miller spoke vaguely about revisiting one of the all-time greatest characters.
The Han Solo spin-off film follows a younger Han Solo, apparently college-aged.
Disney looked at more than 2,500 actors for the part, but the shortlist now includes the likes of Fantastic Four's Miles Teller and Neighbors' Dave Franco.
Star Wars: Episode 9
Written by Rian Johnson
Directed by Colin Trevorrow
Release Date: TBA 2019
We know very little about Episode 9, although director Colin Trevorrow (Jurassic World) stated that Rey's origin story is "deeply and profoundly satisfying," which suggests, to nobody's surprise, she'll play a key role in his film.
Rumored Boba Fett Anthology Film
Written by Simon Kinberg
Release Date:: TBA 2020
Fantastic Four's Josh Trank was supposed to direct, but ultimately left what's rumored to be a Boba Fett origin project in 2015.
Kinberg has spoken very loosely about working on Star Wars.
