Magnolia Pictures Nabs U.S. Rights to Thriller ‘The Ones Below’
Magnolia Pictures has acquired U.S. rights to psychological thriller “The Ones Below.”
The story of a suburban couple’s standoff with new tenants in the apartment below them marks the feature film debut of David Farr. The British playwright and theater director is best known for his work with the Royal Shakespeare Company and for penning the script for Joe Wright’s thriller “Hanna.”
“The Ones Below” pays homage to the more paranoid entries in Roman Polanski’s oeuvre as it depicts the tragic consequences of a drunken dinner party. It debuted at this year’s Toronto International Film Festival.
“David Farr has concocted an incredibly satisfying and clever suspense thriller evocative of classics like ‘Rosemary’s Baby’ and ‘Fatal Attraction,'” Magnolia president Eamonn Bowles said in a statement.
“The Ones Below” stars Clemence Poesy (“Harry Potter”) and David Morrissey (“The Walking Dead”). Magnolia is planning to release the film theatrically in 2016.
The indie label has been actively acquiring new projects in recent weeks. Magnolia picked up the action-adventure movie “The Last King” at the American Film Market, nabbed rights to the cooking documentary “Noma My Perfect Storm” and snagged the Cuba-set coming-of-age story “Viva.”
Nikki Parrott of Tigerlily Films produced “The Ones Below” in association with Protagonist Pictures, with funding from BBC Films and BFI. Executive producers are Dixie Linder, Nick Marston and Ben Hall of Cuba Pictures, Christine Langan and Joe Oppenheimer for BBC Films, Lizzie Francke for BFI and Nigel Williams.
The deal was negotiated by Magnolia senior vice president of acquisitions Dori Begley and Magnolia vice president of acquisitions John Von Thaden. Vanessa Saal, head of sales at Protagonist Pictures, represented the filmmakers.
