Studiocanal Acquires Global Sales, German Rights to Road Movie ‘Tschick,’ with ‘Wetlands’ Director David Wnendt at Helm
Studiocanal has picked up the international sales rights and Studiocanal Germany has acquired the German distribution rights to road movie “Tschick,” which David Wnendt, the helmer of controversial Sundance and Locarno coming-of-age movie “Wetlands,” will direct.
The movie is an adaptation of the bestselling cult novel by Wolfgang Herrndorf. The book, whose English title is “Why We Took the Car,” is one of the biggest literary successes in Germany in recent years, with sales topping 2 million copies. It has been published in more than 30 countries. Wnendt, who recently completed Adolf Hitler satire “Look Who’s Back,” wrote the screenplay with Lars Hubrich (“Tahiti Rose”).
The story centers on 14-year-old outsider Maik Klingenberg. While his mother is in rehab and his father is on a “business trip” with his assistant, Maik spends his time during the summer holidays alone by the pool of his parents’ villa. But then Tschick appears. Tschick’s real name is Andrej Tschichatschow, and he comes from Berlin. He has a stolen Lada with him, and the two youngsters set off on a roadtrip through provincial Germany.
The pic is produced by Marco Mehlitz and Susa Kusche from Lago Film. It is co-produced by BR, ARD Degeto, RBB and Studiocanal Film, with support from Medienboard Berlin-Brandenburg, Mitteldeutsche Medienfoerderung, the FFA and Deutscher Filmfoerderfonds. Shooting starts in Berlin, Brandenburg and central Germany this summer. The theatrical release in Germany has been set for Sept. 15, 2016.
