Cannes: Cannes Market, Los Cabos Team for Pix-in-Post Showcase
Los Cabos Goes to Cannes platform to screen four Mexican projects a year from 2016
In a further step in its international growth strategy, the Cannes Film Market has teamed with Mexico’s Los Cabos Intl. Film Festival to launch Los Cabos Goes to Cannes, an annual Croisette showcase for four Mexican movies in post-production.
Kicking off with Los Cabos’ fourth edition, which runs Nov. 11-15, the initiative aims to tap four Mexican film productions or co-productions from Cabos in Progress 2015, sourcing both Los Cabos in Progress, its WIP event, and recipients of the fest’s Gabriel Figueroa Film Fund post-production coin.
Projects chosen will take part in the 2016 Cannes Market, with filmmakers introducing their work to producers, distributors, sales agents, service companies, support fund execs as well as executives attending the Cannes Film Festival.
Launched in 2012, Los Cabos Festival has rapidly consolidated as a go-to event bridging the U.S., Mexican and Canadian film industries.
Fest launch comes at a time when Mexican production companies can bring to the table much more financing muscle, thanks to Mexican film agency support and Efecine 189 tax break coin, and a young generation of producers, directors and technicians is showing an increased ability to work on both sides of the U.S.-Mexican border as well as link to Canada in formal co-productions.
The Cannes Market-Los Cabos agreement is the fourth signed by the Cannes Film Market after the pix-in-post showcase model successfully launched at Cannes in 2013 with the Buenos Aires Lab Goes to Cannes, in partnership with Buenos Aires’ Bafici fest. The initiative has been expanded this year to both Mexico’s Guadalajara Festival and the Dubai Film Market.
Adding to existing accords, move consolidates the Cannes Festival’s role as a window onto not only the cream of late-spring quality filmmaking worldwide but upcoming works from up-and-coming directors in two key emerging regions of the world: Latin America and the Arab states.
It also gives Los Cabos peerless festival real estate in which to exhibit the best of its in-progress productions.
“We are pleased to build on a new partnership with Los Cabos Film Festival, which has developed top-level industry programs and activities during its three years of existence,” said Jerome Paillard, Cannes Market exec director.
“Los Cabos Goes to Cannes will become a long-lasting partnership with Marché du Film, allowing us to strengthen our role as a trampoline to bold Mexican filmmakers who have the courage to play in the international arena,” added Los Cabos fest director Alonso Aguilar-Castillo.
He added: “For three years, we have been bringing the best of the international industry to Cabos. It’s time to bring the best of Cabos to the top markets.”
“The Marché has a strong relationship with Latin America, in Argentina with Ventana Sur and in Brazil with Films from Rio, and is always willing to open spaces to encourage film making. I am very pleased that we can support Mexican films through the Los Cabos Goes to Cannes platform,” Paillard added.
