TriStar, Matt Tolmach Score Art Heist Book ‘Master Thieves’
TriStar has pre-empted film rights for Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Stephen Kurkjian’s Master Thieves: The Boston Gangsters Who Pulled Off The World’s Greatest Art Heist. Matt Tolmach will produce a film that will tell the story of the 1990 art heist at Boston’s Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum, where thieves took 13 works of art, including several Rembrandts and Vermeer’s The Concert. The stolen art was valued up to $500 million and some 25 years later, the case is still unsolved and the artwork still missing. Those works haven’t been forgotten: empty frames hang as a monument in the museum.
Kurkjian is a Boston Globe reporter who followed the case for the last two decades. He broke many stories on the case. David Beaubaire will run point on the project for TriStar, which continues to seek prestige projects as Tom Rothman has risen atop the Sony Pictures Entertainment Motion Picture Group, which includes TriStar. The studio continues to aggressively seek out new projects. In production now is Money Monster, the Jodie Foster-directed drama that stars George Clooney and Julia Roberts, and the Ang Lee-directed adaptation of Billy Lynn’s Long Halftime Walk. Pictures to be released later this year are the Jonathan Demme-directed Ricki And The Flash, starring Meryl Streep, and the Robert Zemeckis-directed The Walk, with Joseph Gordon-Levitt starring as Philippe Petit. Joe Veltre at Gersh brokered the deal.
