variety.com/2015/film/news/showtime-sets-theatrical-releases-for-marlon-brando-warren-jeffs-documentaries-1201482852/Showtime Sets Theatrical Releases for Marlon Brando, Warren Jeffs Documentaries Showtime is moving into the theatrical releasing business with a pair of documentaries that premiered at the Sundance film Festival — Stevan Riley’s “Listen to Me Marlon” and Amy Berg’s “Prophet’s Prey.” The movies will be released through the Showtime Documentary Films label (a new entity dedicated to theatrical distribution), prior to airing on the network in the fall. “Listen to Me Marlon,” based on Brando’s never-before-heard personal audio archive, will open on July 29 at Film Forum in New York and on July 31 at the Landmark in Los Angeles, then expand nationwide throughout the summer and fall. Producers are John Battsek, R.J. Cutler and George Chignell. Battsek’s Passion Pictures is the production company. “Prophet’s Prey,” based on the cult operated by the now-jailed Warren Jeffs, is a look at the Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. The film is based on Sam Brower’s book “Prophet’s Prey: My Seven-Year Investigation Into Warren Jeffs and the Fundamentalist Church of Latter-Day Saints.” Berg’s Disarming Filmsis the production company. Dennis Harvey called the Brando doc “fascinating” in his Variety review. Variety‘s Justin Chang called the Jeffs film “gripping.” Showtime’s “Sho: Close Up” banner has released “The World According to Dick Cheney,” “Richard Pryor: Omit the Logic,” “Kobe Bryant’s Muse” and “Lost Songs: The Basement Tapes Continued” on the premium cable network.
