variety.com/2015/film/news/robotech-james-wan-director-furious-7-1201484298/Sony Pictures is in early talks with “Furious 7″ director James Wan to helm its live-action “Robotech” feature film. The talks are taking place a month after Sony acquired rights to the project and set it up with Gianni Nunnari and Mark Canton producing and Michael Gordon (“300,” “G.I. Joe”) writing the script. The series on which it’s based is centered on humanity’s use of robot technology to fend off alien invaders. “Robotech” derives from a series of popular Japanese TV shows that made their way over to the United States in the ’80s. The rights to the material had originally been at Warner Bros. with Tobey Maguire and Akiva Goldsman on board as producers. Prior to “Furious 7,” Wan co-created the lucrative “Saw” and “Insidious” franchises along with directing the surprise hit “The Conjuring.” He’s producing “Insidious 3″ and returning to direct “The Conjuring 2” for New Line in the fall. Wan is repped by Paradigm. News about the “Robotech” talks was first reported by Deadline Hollywood.
