PARIS — Critically acclaimed Franco-Greek helmer Costa-Gavras will be feted as guest of honor at Cannes Classics, the selection dedicated to heritage films.
A Cannes vet, Costa-Gavras won the Palme d’Or for “Missing” in 1982, served on the jury in 1976 and won the Jury Prize with “Z” in 1969. “Z,” which won both an Oscar and a Golden Globe, will play at Cannes Classics in its restored version.
As part of Orson Welles’ centennial celebration, Cannes will play his classic film “Citizen Kane” (restored by Warner Bros. Motion, pictured) , Carol Reed’s “The Third Man” (restored by Studiocanal) and Welles’ “The Lady From Shanghai” (restored by Sony Pictures), as well as two documentaries, Elisabeth Kapnist’s “Orson Welles, autopsie d’une légende” and Clara and Julia Kuperberg’s “This Is Orson Welles.”
Cannes Classics will also pay tribute to late Portuguese master Manoel de Oliveira and will unspool his posthumous film “Visita ou memórias e confissões.”
The Classics section, Cannes festival’s artistic director Thierry Fremaux’s brainchild, will showcase Kent Jones’s “Hitchcock/Truffaut,” penned by Jones and the French Cinematheque’s Serge Toubiana; Richard Melloul’s “Depardieu grandeur nature”; Gabriel Clarke and John McKenna’s “Steve McQueen: The Man & Le Mans”; Nancy Buirski’s “By Sidney Lumet”; and Daniel Raim’s “Harold and Lilian: A Hollywood Love Story.”
As part of the tribute to Ingrid Bergman, Cannes Classics will play “Ingrid Bergman, in Her Own Words.”
The festival will also celebrate the 60th anniversary of the Palme d’Or with Alexis Veller’s “The Golden Palm’s Legend” (La Légende de la Palme d’Or).
