National Free Comic Book Day is right around the corner, on Saturday, May 2 and an Ashburn comic book store is opening just in time.
Comic Logic, located at 44031 Ashburn Shopping Plaza, Suite #281 at the Ashburn Village Shopping Center, will celebrate its grand opening Saturday, April 25 at noon. An area Star Wars costumed troupe chapter, the NOVA Roller Derby girls, The Hater Nation podcast, professional comic artist Jerry Gaylord and many more are expected to be in attendance at the ribbon cutting.
The comic book store is the only one of its kind in the county. It also will have original artwork for sale.
“As for an actual comic store, this is it,” co-owner Kevin Bednarz said.
Bednarz, who also owns the popular Ashburn Pub in the same retail center, teamed up with several area comic aficionados including Rob Kaylin, Rich Gollhofer and Stephanie Blodgett to open the store. Previously, those three owned Laughing Over Comics in Lansdowne.
“Once that closed, there was an opportunity to open something in this area,” Kaylin said. “Kevin was a subscriber of the Lansdowne store and was interested in maybe opening something up. We talked and things just kind of rolled from there.”
Kaylin said the previous store didn’t have any shortage of sales and people were still interested in comics.
“The timing was great especially with Free Comic Day in the spring,” Bednarz said. “We thought if we don’t do this, somebody else will. It’s the only one within 20 miles.”
Kaylin noted that Bednarz had the knowledge of small business ventures and had found a perfect location while he, Gollhofer and Blodgett had knowledge of the comic book aspect. “Partnering was a good balance for being able to get something moving on a quick pace,” he said.
One of the features of Comic Logic is the original artwork for sale inside the store. Many of the pieces are the work of Bednarz. He’s created custom skateboard decks and artwork of The Walking Dead characters, among many pieces. There are five artists with art for sale. “That’s one thing that we do that I think is different than other stores,” Kaylin said.
Gollhofer said even though the store isn’t open daily yet, there’s about 1,500 to 2,000 comic books available at the store and more will come in every week after the grand opening.
One week after that grand opening is Free Comic Book Day, when any person can get two or three free comic books. “Every year for the past couple of years it’s grown hugely,” Gollhofer said.
Kaylin said it’s a great day for people to pick books out who might not read comics, or for those that do can start a new book that they might not have bought otherwise. Other giveaways will be included, and the team hopes to offer art classes for kids and adults by the summer.
