‘In Cold Blood’ Getting TV Event Series Treatment In Weinstein Co Deal
The Weinstein Company has optioned TV rights to Truman Capote’s 1966 bestseller In Cold Blood with the aim of making it a TV event series. It would be the first TV series treatment of the seminal narrative nonfiction book, which most recently surfaced as dueling feature films: 2005’s Capote, which won Philip Seymour Hoffman the Best Actor Oscar for playing Capote; and 2006’s Infamous with Toby Jones playing the author. It was a 1967 Richard Brooks-penned film starring Robert Blake and Scott Wilson as the killers and then a 1996 TV movie.
In this incarnation, Gary Oldman and Douglas Urbanski’s Flying Studios (Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy) will produce the project, with Becoming Jane scribe Kevin Hood attached to write. The Weinsteins’ SVP Scripted TV Marc Velez, VP Scripted TV Megan Spanjian and Creative Executive Lauren O’Connor will oversee the project for TWC, whose TV division is in the works to be sold off to ITV in a deal worth a reported $950M+.
“Truman Capote’s In Cold Blood has been riveting audiences since it first hit the literary scene almost 50 years ago, and it continues to have that same thrilling, timeless appeal today,” Harvey Weinstein said in the announcement today. “We are extremely excited to be partnering with Gary, Doug and the whole Flying Studios team to bring what’s sure to be an unbelievable series to TV viewers.”
Originally a four-part serial in The New Yorker, In Cold Blood was published by Random House and went on to become the second-biggest-selling true crime book of all time. It follows the brutal 1959 murders of a Kansas farm family and the effect of the killings on both the community and the men who eventually were convicted, with Copote developing personal relationships with both Perry Smith and Dick Hickock. Capote and his friend and fellow author Harper Lee (To Kill A Mockingbird) traveled to Kansas to interview locals and investigators and took six years to finish the book.
The rights deal was brokered by TWC’s Sarah Sobel, EVP Business & Legal Affairs, with APA, which reps Flying Studios. Hood is also repped by APA, the UK’s Independent Talent Group and Nelson Davis, Llp. The Capote estate is repped by Greenburg Traurig.
