Mischa Barton claims in a lawsuit that her mother, Nuala, siphoned earnings the actress made from TV and movies.
In the suit filed on Tuesday in Los Angeles Superior Court, Barton contends that Nuala Barton “committed a series of egregious acts to intentionally exploit and harm her own daughter” when she represented her as her talent manager.
Mischa Barton claims she entered into an oral agreement with her mother when she was 8, whereby Nuala Barton would receive a 10% management fee. The suit also claims that her mother created limited liability companies to control Barton’s income, doling out an “‘allowance’ to Barton at her sole discretion and on a sporadic basis.”
But Mischa Barton claims that her mother induced her to buy a $7.8 million Beverly Hills home, granted herself a one-half interest in the property and then encumbered it with two deeds of trust without providing documentation to her daughter. It also claims that she withheld compensation for acting, modeling and endorsement work, and lied to her by claiming that Barton’s work on the movie “The Hoarder” was substantially less than was negotiated. Instead, Nuala Barton pocketed the difference, the lawsuit claims.
Nuala Barton did not immediately respond to a message left at her production company.
Mischa Barton’s lawsuit claims that her mother exploited her name, image and likeness to create side businesses like a Mischa Barton handbag line and a Mischa Barton fashion boutique without compensating her daughter. It also claims that Nuala Barton damaged her daughter’s reputation by entering in to endorsement contracts without first informing Mischa Barton, now 29, of her obligations.
The lawsuit contends that her mother and her father, Paul, who is not named in the complaint, still live in the Beverly Hills home but that their daughter “is not welcome at the property.”
Mischa Barton is represented in the litigation by Alex Weingarten and Leslie Eggers of Venable.
