James Gunn, MGM Moving Forward on ‘Belco Experiment’
“Guardians of the Galaxy” director James Gunn and MGM have tapped Australian director Greg McLean to helm horror project “The Belco Experiment” from Gunn’s script.
Gunn is producing with Peter Safran. Production will start in June in Colombia.
The story follows an American company in South America being mysteriously sealed off and its employees showing their true natures when they are ordered to kill each other or be killed themselves.
Gunn made the announcement Tuesday in a post his Facebook page.
“I’m incredibly excited to announce that we’re commencing production on a new film, The Belco Experiment, from my own script,” he said. “The story revolves around the American Belco company in South America which is mysteriously sealed off at the beginning of a work day, and its employees are ordered to kill each other or be killed themselves. This starts an escalation of violence, where we discover the true nature of each and every Belco employee.”
Gunn said the plot came to him in a dream: “I cannot tell you how passionate and excited I am about this project! It’s a script I wrote a few years ago, for which I have always had a deep love. Believe it or not, it’s a film that first came to me in a dream, and I woke up and wrote the first draft in a two-week fugue state binge.”
Gunn is on board to produce and direct Marvel-Disney’s “Guardians of the Galaxy 2,” which has been slotted for May 5, 2017.
McLean wrote and directed 2005’s Australian horror film “Wolf Creek” and 2013’s “Wolf Creek 2.”
Gunn also tweeted about the news.
