deadline.com/2015/03/pearl-button-berlin-winner-kino-lorber-1201399114/Berlin Winner ‘The Pearl Button’ Acquired By Kino Lorber Patricio Guzmán’s The Pearl Button has the distinction of winning this year’s Berlin Film Festival Silver Bear prize for Best Script — as a documentary. A fall limited release is in the works for the follow-up to Guzmán’s Nostalgia For The Light. It uses water as a metaphor for the history of crimes against humanity in Chile: Aerial shots of Tierra del Fuego are juxtaposed with an investigation of state crimes by Chile’s military junta and rare interviews with the last descendants of its indigenous people. It marks the latest Berlin biggie distribution deal for indie distributor Kino Lorber, which last month scooped up the fest’s Golden Bear winner Taxi from exiled Iranian helmer Jafar Panahi. This Pearl Button deal was negotiated between Kino Lorber CEO Richard Lorber and Pyramide International’s Lucero Garzon.

variety.com/2015/film/news/pearl-button-bought-by-kino-lorber-berlin-1201460848/Berlin Winner ‘Pearl Button’ Bought for U.S. by Kino Lorber Kino Lorber has acquired all U.S. rights to Chilean filmmaker Patricio Guzman’s “The Pearl Button,” which won the Silver Bear award for best script at the Berlin Film Festival last month. “The Pearl Button,” a documentary exploring Chile’s coastline and past, is a follow-up to Guzman’s “Nostalgia for the Light.” Kino Lorber plans a theatrical rollout in more than 50 markets, along with educational distribution, to be followed by digital release on all major platforms. The film explores Chile’s 2,670 miles of coastline, the Patagonian indigenous people, the first English sailors and brutalized political prisoners. The pic’s title comes from a short history lesson about Jemmy Button, a teenager sold to a British naval captain in 1830 for a mother-of-pearl button. The deal was negotiated between Kino Lorber CEO Richard Lorber and Pyramide International’s Lucero Garzon.
