Now we know that Mad Max: Fury Road will indeed make a pit-stop in Cannes, but on the day after the event opens. The Warner Bros and Village Roadshow actioner that stars Tom Hardy and Charlize Theron will be presented in the Official Selection as an out-of-competition title on Thursday May 14. It will be released day-and-date the following day. This is the first film in the series since 1985’s Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome. Miller directed that pic, along with 1979’s Mad Max and its 1981 sequel The Road Warrior, which made Mel Gibson an international star. The 3D Fury Road is set in a world in which gangs clash over scare petrol and water resources. There, Max Rockatansky (Hardy) teams up with the Empress Furiosa (Theron), who is fleeing a gang in hot pursuit. This answers at least one question about how the Cannes Film Festival is shaping up, while many others linger ahead of the April 16 unveiling of the rest of the Official Selection. Ethan and Joel Coen are jury presidents; the fest runs from May 13-24.
