Showtime acquired the U.S. television rights to “Meru,” which won the audience award for documentaries at the Sundance Film Festival in January. Mongrel Media bought Canadian rights. Submarine handled the sales. The film was co-directed by Jimmy Chin and Elizabeth Chai Vasarhelyi, who also produced with Shannon Ethridge. Executive producers are Daniel T. Reiner, Elizabeth Lauren Reiner, Jonas Tempel, Chris Wright and Loren Bough. “Meru” is about three elite mountain climbers — Conrad Anker, Jimmy Chin and Renan Ozturk — who sacrifice everything but their friendship as they attempt to climb the never-before-completed Shark’s Fin on Mount Meru in the Indian Himalayas in 2011. Those knowledgeable about rock climbing like “Into Thin Air” author Jon Krakauer and “Forget Me Not” author Jenni Lowe-Anker also appear. Music Box Films released Poland’s “Ida,” which won the Academy Award for foreign-language film earlier this year.
