Scott Riley, owner of Main Street Comics and Games in Springfield, Ohio, is opening a second store in the Upper Valley Mall. Although larger retailers have been deserting the mall, Riley says it has a “community vibe” and plenty of foot traffic, and he sees the new shop, which will carry a limited selection, as a convenient location for shoppers.

free comics, but Scott Riley is opening a new business at the Upper Valley Mall.
Riley has owned Main Street Comics and Games, 1613 E. Main St., for about six years. But on the first weekend in May, he will open a second, smaller location at the Upper Valley Mall just in time for Free Comic Book Day. The new store, Little Main St., will carry a small selection of comics, as well as games, T-shirts, graphic novels and action figures.
Despite recent decisions by anchors like J.C. Penney and Macy’s to close their locations at the mall, Riley believes there’s plenty of foot traffic there to make his new store successful. His original Main Street location also recently began hosting live music on weekends, he said.
“The mall has a community vibe,” Riley said. “It’s something you don’t get around here any more.”
Raven Books, a locally-owned used books store, also opened at the Upper Valley Mall earlier this year. Riley said he would like to work more closely with other business owners to find new ways to draw more customers to the mall.
Carla Miller, a specialty leasing representative for Urban Retail Properties LLC, confirmed an agreement has been signed to open the new comic book store in May. The new store will be open in a roughly 1,500 square-foot space next to Kay Jewelers, previously occupied by Vitamin World.
Riley also has plans to open an art gallery in a separate space in the mall, which Miller said will be located in the former Ninja Headquarters at the Upper Valley Mall.
The new comic store will not carry the full selection of items available at Riley’s primary location on East Main Street, but it will offer a more convenient location for some customers, he said. He will continue to direct customers to the Main Street location for the full selection of comics. Riley said he plans to host a party for customers when the new comic store opens.
“We are going to try and bring some fun back to the mall,” Riley said.
