There’s been a long standing rumour about new Nintendo hardware that I never took as entirely serious. While the Wii U has famously struggled, I was pretty sure Nintendo would see it out for a couple more years.
Turns out I was wrong.
During a press conference, Nintendo announced that they’re working on a new “dedicated game system” with a new ‘concept’ called ‘NX’. Here is the quote as officially translated by Nintendo CEO Saturo Iwata (via Eurogamer):
As proof that Nintendo maintains strong enthusiasm for the dedicated game system business, let me confirm that Nintendo is currently developing a dedicated game platform with a brand-new concept under the development codename “NX”. It is too early to elaborate on the details of this project, but we hope to share more information with you next year.
There really isn’t much more to ellaborate on at the moment. I can’t imagine we will hear anything at this E3, but E3 2016? We might be looking at the announcement of another Nintendo console.
