Based on an original idea from Johnstad, the plot details are being kept under wraps, with insiders only describing it as a big sci-fi action idea. The pitch is said to be a super-secret concept with the hope that the project can turn into a potential franchise. Tolmach would produce through his production banner with Johnstad penning the script. Tolmach’s executive VP of production, David Manpearl, brought the pitch to Tolmach who, like so many producers in town, wanted to work with Johnstad following his success on “Act of Valor” and “300: Rise of an Empire.” The two then took the pitch to Columbia Pictures president of production Michael De Luca and senior VP of production Jonathan Kadin, who were so excited by the idea that they bought the pitch in the room. De Luca has been working hard to find more titles and properties for the studio which can turn into franchises, and sees potential in this pitch given the players that are involved. As for Johnstad, the scribe has begun to make a name for himself as writer who delivers big action in his scripts, along with classic heroes audiences love to root for. Besides penning both “300” and “Act of Valor,” Johnstad is also set to pen “Aquaman” for Warner Bros. starring Jason Momoa, which like all DC properties, is a top priority at the studio. He is also developing several other scripts including “The Lost Legion” for Warner Bros. and Dan Lin. He is repped by WME and Untitled Entertainment.
