Entirely shot on 35mm, it’s billed as the European flipside to William Friedkin’s 1971 classic. Drafthouse Films acquired U.S. distribution rights out of Cannes last year based on an 8-minute sizzle reel and has set a May 15 release. Check out the red-band trailer. Set in 1970s Marseille, the gritty pic follows Dujardin’s magistrate Pierre Michel in his relentless crusade to dismantle the smuggling operation. Gilles Lellouche (Mesrine) plays Michel’s charismatic kingpin nemesis, Gatean “Tany” Zampa, who runs the largest underground heroin trade into the U.S. and always seems to be one step ahead. Michel is ultimately forced to make the most difficult decision of his life: continue waging his war, or ensure his family’s safety, before it’s too late. Céline Sallette (Rust And Bone), Mélanie Doutey (The Players), and Benoît Magimel (Little White Lies) also star. The film, distributed by Gaumont in France, received strong notices and sold 1.5M tickets there during its late 2014 run. La Vie En Rose‘s Alain Goldman is producer.
