variety.com/2015/film/news/insurgent-on-track-for-bigger-opening-than-divergent-1201442202/“Insurgent” is heading for a $57 million opening weekend, according to industry tracking. If that number holds, the debut will be bigger than that of “Divergent,” the first film adaptation of Veronica Roth’s bestselling series of novels. That initial chapter in the futuristic franchise kicked off to $54.6 million last March, going on the make $150.9 million domestically and $288.7 million worldwide. With nearly a month to go before “Insurgent” premieres on March 20, that opening figure could improve. It’s good news for Lionsgate, the studio behind the films, because the “Divergent” series is seen as a key part of its future given that this year brings the final installment in its lucrative “Hunger Games” series. It’s possible that the stronger tracking is partially attributable to star Shailene Woodley’s higher profile after the success of “The Fault in Our Stars.” The romantic drama was a hit because it attracted many of the same tweens that should turn out for the latest “Divergent” film. “Insurgent” brings back “Divergent” stars Theo James and Kate Winslet, along with series newcomer Octavia Spencer. Robert Schwentke (“Flightplan”) directs the picture. Tickets for “Insurgent” went on sale this week at outlets such as Fandango and MovieTickets.com.
