They are the writer/directors of Still Alice, the touching adaptation of the Lisa Genova novel that has Julianne Moore in hot contention for Best Actress for her portrayal of a happily married linguistics professor suffering the onset of Alzheimer’s Disease. Sony Pictures Classics opens the film in wide release tomorrow. The acquisition is something of a surprise because Studio 8 launched with such an expectation its focus will be the global tent poles that Robinov was known for at Warner Bros. But the studio mandate is to work with both new and established filmmakers with a strong vision and its recent activity has been on the taste maker level. Backed by Sony and the Chinese investment management firm Fosun Group, Studio 8 gets its first picture in production with the Ang Lee-directed adaptation of the critically acclaimed en Fountain novel Billy Lynn’s Long Halftime Walk. Studio 8 recently partnered with Tom Rothman’s TriStar and Film4 on that film, which is casting. WME and Circle of Confusion rep Glatzer and Westmoreland.
