Johnny Knoxville-Produced ‘Being Evel’ Jumps To Gravitas Ventures
Gravitas Ventures has acquired North American rights to Daniel Junge’s feature documentary Being Evel, the story of the notorious stunt performer Evel Knievel that debuted last month at the Sundance Film Festival. A summer release in theaters and VOD is planned for the pic that counts Johnny Knoxville among its producers and he was beating the drum for it in Park City.
The docu was produced for History Films by Brendan Kiernan, Justin Moore-Lewy, Mat Hoffman and Jeff Tremaine and Knoxville. The film was a co-production between HeLo and Knoxville’s Dickhouse Productions.
Junge’s recent films include Beyond The Brick: A Lego Brickumentary, Fight Church and the Oscar-winning docu short Saving Face. Being Evel captures a lifetime of highs and lows of a maverick daredevil — one who transformed from an outlaw and into a 20th century pop culture icon who inspired a legion of X Games athletes and, not insignificantly, the outrageous stunts and sometimes tasteless frat boy debauchery evident in Jackass and Bad Grandpa.
“Evel Knievel and this film flat out kicked ass,” Gravitas Ventures founder and CEO Nolan Gallagher said. “We are thrilled to work with Daniel Junge, Mat Hoffman, Brendan Kiernan, Johnny Knoxville, Jeff Tremain and A+E Studios/History Films to do everything we can to spread this story of a true iconoclast to audiences of all ages.”
The deal was negotiated by Gallagher and Josh Braun from Submarine on behalf of the filmmakers.
