variety.com/2015/film/news/strand-buys-u-s-for-in-the-basement-exclusive-1201428467/Strand Releasing has acquired U.S. rights to Ulrich Seidl’s “In the Basement” from the Coproduction Office. The documentary had its world premiere at last summer’s Venice Film Festival. Strand, which closed the deal at the Berlin Film Festival, is planning a summer release. Seidl follows 25 Austrian subjects, including a woman who keeps lifelike babies in containers which she nurtures and treats as they were real, and a group of collectors who revel with their Nazi paraphernalia and celebrate with song and beer. Guy Lodge said in his review for Variety that the film is “…by turns uproarious, repulsive and oddly touching.” The deal was done between Jon Gerrans of Strand Releasing and Philippe Bober of the Coproduction Office. Strand previously distributed Seidl’s “Pardise: Trilogy,” released last year.
