Kinology has scored a flurry of sales on Benoit Philippon and Alexandre Heboyan’s animated family feature “Mune” following a packed screening at the EFM which drew rounds of applauses.
Kinology has sold the toonpic to Switzerland (Praesens), Freeman (Eastern Europe/except Poland), Greece (Odeon) and Portugal (Cine Mundo). “Mune” previously sold to Notorious Pictures (Italy), Smile Entertainment (South Korea), Gulf Films (Middle East), Domo Media (China), Zoom Entertainment (India), Volga Films (CIS) and Blitz (Former Yugoslavia).
Gregoire Melin, Kinology’s founder, told Variety the company was in advanced negotiations to close Germany, the U.K., Latin America, Turkey, Israel, Asia and Benelux.
A U.S. studio is reportedly circling “Mune” to take on various territories, including North America.
“Mune” will have its North American premiere at the Gkids’ New York Intl. Film Festival in March.
Set in an imaginary universe where the sun and the moon must be protected by guardians, the feature follows Mune, a faun who is unexpectedly selected to be the new guardian of the moon and discovers he has supernatural powers.
“Mune” is produced by Aton Soumache for On Entertainment, the Paris-based company behind Mark Osborne’s “The Little Prince.” Kinology is co-producing and Orange Studio.
“It’s a fairy tale in the tradition of Disney movies with a mythology, a new universe, similar in some ways to Miyazaki films,” said Philippon.
Philippon previously directed Forrest Whitaker starrer “Lullaby for Pi,” while Heboyan has worked on “Kung Fu Panda” and “Monsters vs. Aliens.” The movie is creatively backed by Disney’s vet animator Glen Keane and its key crew includes character designer Nicolas Marlet (“Kung Fu Panda”), animation supervisor Sebastien Bruneau (“Hotel Transylvania”), character technical supervisor Hidekata Yosumi (“Tangled”).
In Berlin, Kinology has also closed a raft of sales on Terry Gilliam’s “Don Quixote” with Jack O’Connell (“Unbroken”) to Concorde Telemunchen for Germany/Austria, Warner for Spain, among others. Shingle is also pre-selling Jean-Francois Richet’s (“Blood Father”) “One Wild Moment” with Vincent Cassel and Francois Cluzet.
