variety.com/2015/film/markets-festivals/berlin-cj-entertainment-acquires-slate-of-arthouse-titles-exclusive-1201427203/CJ Entertainment, South Korea’s largest movie company, has picked up a slate of arthouse titles that it will begin selling at Berlin’s European Film Market. The titles are backed by CGV Arthouse, the new name for CGV Collage, which is the finance and distribution arm of Korea’s biggest multiplex chain CJ-CGV, itself part of the CJ Group empire. The CGV Arthouse slate is headed by “The Shameless,” a mob drama directed by oh Seung-wook, and toplined by high profile stars Kim Nam-gil (“The Pirates”) and Cannes best actress winner Jeon Do-yeon (“The Housemaid,” “Secret Sunshine”). It also includes “Coin Locker Girl,” a noir drama about slavery set in an underworld of thieves and debt collectors. The film is directed by Han Jun-hee and stars Kim Hye-soo and Kim Ko-eun. Older titles from CGV Arthouse include “A Girl at My door,” which was in Cannes’ Un Certain Regard last year, and “Thread of Lies,” a post-suicide relationship drama that had its premiere in Busan 2014. The inclusion of more culturally valuable content is important for the Korean major. It has been accused of damaging the independent sector through its leading positions in exhibition, production and finance, and was last year fined by Korea’s competition authorities for favoring its own films at CGV theaters. CJ is busily diversifying into other parts of Asia. It has begun movie production activities in Vietnam, China, Thailand and Indonesia. CJ-CGV is now the tenth largest cinema chain in the giant Chinese market.
