UTA is repping U.S. rights. Lesher produced Alejandro Gonzalez-Inarritu’s “Birdman” and 2014 Brad Pitt-starrer “The Fury,” and is in post on Johnny Depp starrer “Black Mass” and prepping Harmony Korine’s “The Trap” for a spring start. A Japanese underworld thriller, “Tokyo Vice’s” sales will be launched at Berlin’s European Film Market. It is scheduled to go into production this summer on location in Japan. “Tokyo Vice,” which Lesher calls a passion project and which was first reported in 2013, is helmed by musicvideo and commercials director Anthony Mandler from a screenplay written by playwright J.T. Rogers. Like so many films coming on to the market at Berlin, “Tokyo Vice” is true-event inspired, being based on “Tokyo Vice: An American Reporter on the Police Beat in Japan,” a 2008 memoir by Jake Adelstein that covers his years as the first non-Japanese reporter at one of Japan’s largest newspapers, Yomiuri Shinbun, and his dealings the Japanese criminal syndicate Yakuza. Adam Kassan (“End of Watch,” “Black Mass”) is also producing; Bin Jakupi, Nestel and Wilson exec produce.
