variety.com/2015/film/news/berlin-oscilloscope-buys-u-s-rights-to-the-second-mother-exclusive-1201426432/Oscilloscope Laboratories has acquired U.S. rights from The Match Factory to Anna Muylaert’s “The Second Mother,” on the heels of its world premiere at the Sundance Film Festival. The Brazilian film won a Special Jury Award for Acting in the world cinema competition for its two leads, Regina Case and Camila Mardila. “The Second Mother” is also an official selection of the Berlin Film Festival with a screening Sunday. Oscilloscope will release the film theatrically later this year. ” The Second Mother” — titled “Que Horas Ela Volta?” in Portuguese — centers around a hard-working live-in housekeeper, played by Case, in Sao Paulo. When her estranged daughter (Mardila) suddenly appears, the unspoken class barriers that exist within the home are thrown into disarray. Production companies are Africa Filmes and Gullane Filmes. Producers are Fabiano Gullane, Caio Gullane, Debora Ivanov and Anna Muylaert. Oscilloscope’s Dan Berger and David Laub said, “’The Second Mother’ is an absolutely wonderful film. It’s smart, sophisticated, and often times incisively funny.” Muylaert said, “When we first showed this film at Sundance, I wasn’t sure if people outside of my country could understand the complexity of these relationships, but when the film ended, peoples’ reactions showed me that they are universal.” Thania Dimitrakopoulou negotiated the deal on behalf of the The Match Factory and filmmakers.
