WestEnd will launch international sales in Berlin. Rooney Mara and Ben Mendelsohn star in the drama about two people forced to revisit a passionate yet illicit relationship they had years ago. “ ‘Blackbird’s’ truth resides in looking unflinchingly at Una (Mara) and Ray’s (Mendelsohn) taboo relationship. It balances our emotions and sympathies on a knife-edge,” said Andrews. WestEnd is producing the film along with Jean Doumanian and Patrick Daly. The screenplay, adapted by David Harrower, won the Olivier Award. Principal photography begins in June in the U.K. Andrews is known for his radical versions of plays by Shakespeare, Anton Chekhov and Tennessee Williams, as well as his stagings of cutting-edge contemporary writers. WestEnd’s Berlin lineup also includes Tomm Moore’s Oscar-nominated “Song of the Sea,” Jeremy Saulnier’s crime thriller “Green Room,” Kieran Darcy-Smith’s “By Way of Helena,” starring Woody Harrelson and Liam Hemsworth, Fernando Leon de Aranoa’s “A Perfect Day,” starring Benicio del Toro, Tim Robbins and Olga Kurylenko, and Isabel Coixet’s romance “Learning to Drive,” starring Ben Kingsley and Patricia Clarkson.
