UPDATE: Former Death Row Records CEO Suge Knight has been arrested for murder following a fatal hit and run in Compton on Thursday. Knight was arrested at 3 a.m. PT, the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department announced Friday. He is currently being held on $2 million bail at the West Hollywood station. Knight visited the station with his attorney, James Blatt, to be interviewed by homicide detectives earlier Friday morning.
Previously: Knight, 49, claims he was attacked by two crew members near a promotional shoot for Universal’s “Straight Outta Compton,” an upcoming film about the rap group NWA. In an effort to flee to safety, he said he hit the unidentified men with his truck.
However, Lt. John Corina of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department told the LATimes that 20 minutes after an argument on the “Straight Outta Compton” set, Knight followed the two men down the street to Tam’s Burgers where he ran them over.
Witnesses told the Times that after hitting the men, Knight backed over them before leaving the scene.
A spokesman for the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department confirmed to Variety that one person died at the scene and another was injured.
TMZ, who first broke the news, reported that “Straight Outta Compton” producers Dr. Dre, Ice Cube and Game were also on the scene when Knight arrived in his car.
Their reps could not be reached for comment.
A bystander told TMZ the man who died was Knight’s own friend Terry Carter. Authorities have yet to identify the victim or release the condition of the second man.
Last year, Knight was shot six times at a pre-MTV Awards party hosted by Chris Brown in Hollywood.
He is currently out on $500,000 bail for allegedly stealing a camera. His court hearing is scheduled for Tuesday.
