Fresh off the heels of Amazon’s history-making victories at the 2015 Golden Globes with “Transparent,” Netflix raked in three wins at the Screen Actors Guild Awards on Sunday, solidifying the dominance of streaming series in the television landscape.
Netflix won three of the five gongs they were nominated for, including a first-ever SAG for outstanding comedy actress Uzo Aduba, whose series “Orange Is The New Black” also won for best comedy ensemble. Kevin Spacey, who took home the Golden Globe for lead actor in a drama, landed his second trophy of the 2015 awards season for “House of Cards,” winning for outstanding male actor in a drama series at the Screen Actors Guild Awards.
Netflix’s “House of Cards” was also nominated for outstanding ensemble in a drama series, which went to “Downton Abbey” (PBS), and outstanding actress in a drama series, Robin Wright, who was beat out by Viola Davis for “How To Get Away With Murder” (ABC).
Just before the SAG Awards began, “House of Cards” actor Mahershala Ali told Variety about the power of Netflix on the red carpet. “I think there’s always going to be some sharing involved,” he said of streaming services versus broadcast and cable TV. “It’s great to see this other outlet emerge because it just means more jobs for actors; I think it creates more competition. I think competition is good because everyone has to focus on the quality of the materials and then also, to pull certain actors off of film, the material has got to be of quality to do something that is on the internet.”
“Orange Is The New Black’s” Nick Sandow believes broadcast television stands no chance next to Netflix and other online networks including Hulu and Amazon. “They are taking over. Network television is a dinosaur. It’s an early time for it to be over, but it’s going to be over without a question,” he insisted.
