Sarah Jessica Parker Poised To Star In HBO Divorce Comedy Pilot
A decade after the end of Sex And The City, series star Sarah Jessica Parker is nearing a return to HBO with a new half-hour comedy. HBO is finalizing deals for the single-camera project, which Parker is expected to star in and executive produce.
Titled Divorce, the project, which is awaiting a formal pilot green light, is being written by British writer-actress Sharon Horgan. It tells the story of a very, very long divorce and is expected to be produced in New York where Parker lives and Sex And The City also was based. Paul Simms, who has been helping another female actress-creator, Lena Dunham, on her New York-based HBO comedy Girls, has been tapped to assist Horgan as executive producer/showrunner. Horgan will executive produce through her Meriman Films, along with long-time collaborator Aaron Kaplan of Kapital Entertainment. Parker and Alison Benson will executive produce through Parker’s Pretty Matches Prods.
This is the first major TV acting commitment since Sex And The City for Parker, who has been actively pursued by broadcast and cable networks. Her only series gig has been a recent arc on Fox’s Glee. As a producer, she exec produced the 2009 HBO pilot Washingtonienne. In features, she will next be seen in All Roads Lead To Rome.
In the U.K., Horgan created/co-created and starred in series Pulling, Bad Management and Dead Boss. She partnered with Kaplan to adapted all of them in the U.S., with all three projects gong to pilot. The duo, who also collaborated on Horgan’s ABC comedy pilot Bad Mom, recently launched a joint venture for projects in the U.S. and the U.K. They have A Sort Of Family, a multi-camera comedy in development at CBS and CBS TV Studios, which Horgan is co-writing with British scribe Neil Forsyth. She is repped by WME, Duncan Hayes in the UK and George Davis.
The pending pilot order Divorce comes on the heels of HBO’s pilot pickup of a comedy pilot starring Sarah Silverman. It also comes from a British female writer, Secret Diary Of A Call Girl creator Lucy Prebble.
