Omaha, Nebraska, will get its own convention in 2015, the O Comic Con. Several entertainmentguests have already been announced (including an actor from the original Star Trek), and there will be about a dozen comics creators on hand as well. While comics culture has apparently been slow to take hold in Omaha, the three organizers of the con were inspired by the fact that the anime con Anime NebrasKon drew 6,000 attendees.

Pop culture aficionados know all about Comic-Con, San Diego’s annual sci-fi/fantasy/movies/comics mecca.
They may even know about Des Moines Comic Con, Denver Comic Con or Planet Comicon in Kansas City. But what about a convention in Omaha?

While there have been short-lived comic book and pop culture conventions in town, O Comic Con hopes to be the one that sticks around.
O Comic Con comes to the Mid-America Center in Council Bluffs from May 29 to 31, with vendors, artists and big-name guests, such as Billy West, the voice of Fry and Dr. Zoidberg on “Futurama,” and Walter Koenig, Checkhov from the original “Star Trek.”
Soon, they’ll announce even more guests, as well as about a dozen comic book artists.
“Everybody knows who Batman is. Everyone knows who the Avengers are,” said Matt Fujan, one of the organizers. “It’s no longer a whole bunch of nerds in the basement.”
Fujan and the other two organizers at O Comic Con saw nearly 6,000 people at the annual Anime NebrasKon and figured the time was ripe for Omaha to have a comics convention.
“We’re focusing on making an excellent event for 2015,” Fujan said. “We want to be able to do this again. Nobody’s in it for the money. It’s three of us, and we’re doing this to make it good for the comic community.”
O Comic Con has space for about 130 vendors and artists, and free community tables for local artists and fan groups.
Guests are already booked for various panels. West will talk about “Futurama,” and Koenig will participate in a Q&A on “Star Trek.” They’ll also do autograph sessions.
Tickets are on sale now at ocomiccon.com. A three-day pass is $45; single day passes are $20 for Friday and Sunday, $25 for Saturday. Children 12 and under are free. Parking is free.
