Drafthouse Acquires Black List Western 'The Keeping Room,' Starring Brit Marling
Directed by Daniel Barber and written by Julia Hart, this 2014 Toronto standout has finally nabbed US distribution.
Drafthouse Films has acquired North American distribution rights to writen Julia Hart’s Black List Western feature "The Keeping Room," which has been at large on the market since its acclaimed world premiere at Toronto International Film Festival.
Directed by Daniel Barber, "The Keeping Room" "focuses on the violent resilience and dramatic camaraderie of three Southern women as their home is besieged during the purges at the close of the American Civil War. Forced to defend their land and fight for their lives, the women take up arms against their male oppressors, shattering gender and genre conventions in the process," per the official synopsis.
"The Keeping Room" will open in an expansive theatrical release across North America in September 2015 and will be released on a variety of VOD platforms and digital, DVD, and Blu-ray formats after its theatrical run.
The well-reviewed film stars indie darling Brit Marling of "Another Earth" and "I Origins," Hailee Steinfeld and newcomer Muna Otaru. Sam Worthington plays a villainous renegade soldier. Indiewire's Eric John called it a "feminist western with bite."
Anne Thompson interviewing Marling extensively ahead of Toronto '14 about the film, writing "If you're eager to see movies about strong women who might actually exist in the real world, check out anything starring brainy actress Brit Marling." Read the full interview here.
Leave it to a distributor like Drafthouse to pick up this worthy film; they've had terrific success with edgy titles on VOD, from "Borgman" to "The Congress," "R100" and Joshua Oppenheimer's upcoming "The Look of Silence."
